    Overview
WD Scorpio delivers best-in-class performance with low power consumption and cool operation. In addition, you'll get one of the quietest 2.5-inch drives on the market with real-time data protection technology to help keep your data safe.

    Key Features
Massive capacity - Whether they are in an external drive or a notebook computer, WD’s 320 GB 2.5-inch drives offer the most available capacity for space-hungry operating systems like Windows Vista™, plus plenty of room left over for photos, music, and video.

Fast and Efficient - With 5400 RPM spin speed and 12 ms access time, even the most demanding customer will appreciate the performance achieved by WD Scorpio drives.

Quiet - In a notebook drive, silence is golden. WD’s exclusive WhisperDrive™ combines state-of-the-art seeking algorithms to yield one of the quietest 2.5-inch hard drives on the market. These algorithms also optimize the way a drive seeks for data, which significantly improves power consumption. So now silence (and longer battery life) is golden.

Reliable and Rugged - WD's ShockGuard™ technology protects the drive mechanics and platter surfaces from shocks. WD's SecurePark™ parks the recording heads off the disk surface during spin up, spin down and when the drive is off. This ensures the recording head never touches the disk surface resulting in improved long term reliability due to less head wear, and improved non- operational shock tolerance.

Tested for Compatibility - We perform tests on hundreds of systems and a multitude of platforms in our FIT Lab and Mobile Compatibility Lab to give our customers confidence that our drives will work in their systems.

This looks like such a sweet drive. I only buy Western Digital hard drives because they are that well made. I have 320GB WD drives in my desktop, it's amazing that the same capacity can now be had in a portable drive.

Thats the interface. 3gbs is SATA2 speed while 1.5gb/s is SATA1 however the drive itsself will never come close to that so your drive is going to be very close to this one in performance.

Shame tho I paied like 220$ for the 250gb one now a 320gb one is out. Question is.. is it dual platter like the 250gb or tri platter like the hiatachi that is 300gb?

If its tri platter does it have the same problem as the hitachi and is slightly bigger than normal (taller) so it may not fit in some notebooks, also that means it wont be as data dense and thus the 250gb drive should have higher performance numbers.

We need more info and benchmarks when the time comes.

how exactly would you know if it wont fit in every notebook? if it says it will fit in notebooks (on their site)

When we get more details just like I said :p there is a standard measurement for a hdd, the one I am comparing it too is slightly bigger, so it fits in most notebooks but not all.

I know WD and there stuff, the pics make it look like a dual platter so all should be fine (and performance thru the roof) but its only and educated guess.

I guess this is the only 320 GB disk with this form factor (2.5") and I have seen Dell offering a 320 GB hard disk on their Inspiron series. So, i guess it wouldn't be of a different size, but we never know, do we?

But if there are so many questions, price/performance and price/GB wise the 250 GB WD Passport would be cheaper and better and you will also get a SATA enclosure, and what more, the benchmarks have been proven to be on par, if not better, with a 160 GB 7200 rpm drive......

    Cheers!

*Edit: But if it is on sale in any of the retail outlets for anywhere in the range of $170-$180 and if it is confirmed that it is dual platter, it will be worth buying it......

but wouldn't dual platter make the disk a little "taller" than usual?

The current generation of drives are all dual platter AFAIK, it would be taller/longer if it is a 3-platter drive.....

and the fact the data is so dense will yield a better data transfer, so it will be very close to a 7200rpm drive

I have been asking this question...... and I think the reason has been mentioned here for WD 250 GB to be considered good enough (the density)..
Also check this thread.... WD 250 GB 5400 rpm better?

Yeh the 7k200 has been getting great reviews, and you can get it for $140 from BB when it in its enclosure! But 320gb is insane.... Definitely should speed it up close to the speeds of the 7k200, I would have thought

Western Digital is garbage, get Hitachi they are much better.

If you want speed get a 7K200 Harddrive, while your at it get two of them and throw them in Raid.

Western Digital makes very low quality drives, no way any western digital will last longer than a Hitachi harddrive. Reliability is everything that is why I go with Hitachi.

Meh, everyone has there preferences when it comes to WD, Hitachi and Seagate. Don't care which I get as long as its one of those three. HDD I will not touch are Maxtor and Toshiba, even though I think Maxtor is selling WD under there name now, who knows for sure, all I know those were the ones that failed the most when I worked on PC.

    *edit* Seagate bought Maxtor.

There's far too much variation from drive to drive to make those kinds of statements.

Anyways, I just wanted to say "woot" -- I was just thinking how much I'd like having a 300~ in my Macbook. I've got a 160 atm, and it's getting a bit cramped.

    thats a bunch of bull****!
your not basing it on fact, your basing that on your opinion.
most of my drives are WD and none have failed yet.
one of them (the one i use for my notebook) gets warm quick and there is ticking noise on occasion, so you can say its really noisy.

    A friend tells me:

Seagate - best warranty (most reliable)

    Western Digital - quietest

    Hitachi - fastest
