Hallo!I own a Dell Inspiron 6400 notebook computer. In the last 6 months month,my system occasionally hangs when I log into my Windows XP OS and OpenSUSE Linux (especially when I connect my Huawei modem to a USB port) and a blue screen appears showing the following text below while in Windows

    Hardware malfunction

Call your hardware vendor for support

    NMI :parity check/memory parity error

    ****The system has halted****

I am thus forced to re-boot my system. My initial thought was that my RAM has a problem.I installed and run the Windows Memory Diagnostic software but the software found no hardware errors in my RAM.Also,I ran the 32 bit Dell Diagnostics utility from the motherboard CD testing all the laptop hardware and found no hardware errors.I have also re-installed my XP twice and I still have the same error.

How do I solve this problem? Please respond to my query as soon as possible and I shall be infinitely grateful. Thanks in advance. My laptop specifications are as below.

    CPU Type Mobile DualCore Intel Pentium T2080, 1733 MHz (13 x 133)

    Motherboard Name Dell Inspiron 6400/E1505

Motherboard Chipset Mobile Intel Calistoga-GM i945GM

    System Memory 1014 MB (DDR2-667 DDR2 SDRAM)

    Disk Drive SAMSUNG HM120JI (120 GB, 5400 RPM, SATA-II)

Take out the ram modules one by one and see if you can go around the error. Testing tools are not always 100%

    cheers ...

Try memtest86, its a great memory checking utility.
Let it run to about 150%. Usually a corrupt memory cell fails the test with errors before 20%

to access the memory cards, turn your system over. In the center, there is a square plastic panel labeled (M)
Unscrew the two screws and you will gain access to the memory cards.
    They are DDR2 sodimms

As qhn mentioned, try each memory card one by one to figure out which memory card has the defective memory chip.

I had same issue on my 9400. Moving from stock Dell Drivers for MB and GPU to drivers downloaded from Intel and Nvidia sites had helped to resolve it. HTH.
