Need some help with a RAM upgrade on my NP8760.

Based on the information posted in the forums --> http://forum.notebookreview.com/sag...er-np8760-clevo-w870cu-owners-lounge-261.html

it appears that the laptop "unofficially" does support 16 GB ram. Armed with this new found knowledge, I went ahead and bought the Corsair Vengeance Laptop Memory Kit 16 GB (2x8 GB) DDR3 1600MHz CL10 PC3 12800 (CMSX16GX3M2A1600C10).

Now my predicament.... BIOS shows the RAM, I am also able to see the RAM in the POST, but windows 7 ultimate crashes at the moment it displays the colored windows logos. (Irrespective of booting from my existing HDD or attempting to do a fresh install on a SSD using the win7 disks)

Any insight to get around this would be greatly appreciated

Even if it POSTs and shows the RAM, you could have a bad stick. Run memtest overnight and see if you get any errors.

Should work. I am with Tsunade Hime that you have bad ram. Try a fresh 16GB set. The w870cu is from the same era as the M15x in my sig and 16GB works while in my laptop the bios doesn't even show 16GB it still works fine.

Well.... if what you guys state is the likely cause then I seem to have 2 bad sticks of RAM and not just  1 (which may very well be the case... but my mind is giving me a hard time accepting )

I attempted booting up the OS with a single stick of RAM (8 GB) to identify which of the 2 Sticks seem to be culprit, windows 7 BSODs when it reaches, the "Starting Windows" screen with the colorful logos. I attempted to see if it will work by pairing it with my 4 GB stick of slower RAM, this time around win 7 just stayed stuck in the "starting windows" screen with no sign of the colored logo or BSOD. I had to kill it.

I will hopefully figure out where my missing USB sticks are and finally get to run the memtest sometime today to see what it has to say.

In the meantime I have a Question:
    - Is there a way to tinker with the BUS speeds to slow down the RAM or any other setting that can be tweaked in the BIOS to see if the current set I have will work (the only way I can get my hands on another 16 GB is when I RMA my current set and wait for replacements )?

    UPDATE:
    Memtest test scenarios
    - 8 GB Stick1 installed on Slot1
    - 8 GB Stick1 installed on Slot2
    - 8 GB Stick2 installed on Slot1
    - 8 GB Stick2 installed on Slot2
    - both mem sticks installed totaling 16 GB
---> memtest does not get past 10-11% on the any of the above described test scenarios and then the system automatically resets. (exactly what is seen when the system attempts to boot windows)

    - run memtest with the current config of 2 Sticks (4 GB and 2 GB)
---> memtest completes successfully with no errors

Followup questions after observing the behavior exhibited by Memtest:
    - is this the behavior seen when the sticks are bad ?
    - is it safe to assume that I had just had bad sticks and new ones are expected to work ?
    - is there something else I am missing here (compatibility issues ?)
    - has it been verified to work only with certain version of BIOS ?

Appreciate any further assistance with this issue.

Two bad sticks of RAM shipped as a package isn't too unbelievable...

Do you have the latest BIOS available for your system? (Don't try to flash with bad RAM!!!).

It may be the slots/contacts are dirty? Do you have a good quality contact cleaner that you can wash the slots and RAM modules down with?

Something like this is what I would recommend:

    See:
    DeoxIT® D-Series

If this doesn't work, then you need to put in the old RAM and RMA the two bad sticks you have.

    Good luck.

I did have the following version initially

    Bios revision: 1.01.15 LS1
    KBC/EC Firmware revision: 1.00.10

around April of 2013 which was updated to

    Bios revision: 1.01.18S LS1
    KBC/EC Firmware revision: 1.00.14

are there any known issues affecting the useability of 16GB RAM with any version BIOS ?

Well.... My second pair of sticks don't seem to fair any better.

At this point I am uncertain as to why my experience with 16 Gigs of RAM on a Clevo W870, is completely different from what the others on this forum have experienced

Unless someone is able to point me to something that I have completely missed... Guess the new sticks are getting RMAed back as well.... :(

Bad sticks of RAM happens, don't fret over it. I've tested 16 GB on the 15.6" version W860CU, it should have like 99% the same internal components.

What RAM modules did you test with... I might try getting the same speed/brand to see if that helps

memtest doesn't seem to want to even test these16 GB RAM modules... I am able to swap my current 2 sticks of RAM in either slot and memtest seems to detect/test my old RAM just fine..

    I have an i7 620M

The internal spec's on the new SoDimms must be different enough from what the BIOS expects that they simply won't work in your system.

This is one reason to max out a platform asap - there is no guarantee that you can find the requisite parts later on.

Hope you have luck tracking down RAM that does work for you though.

if you have XMP profiles on your BIOS you should set the ram to run at 1066mhz since it is what both the CPU and RAM claimed to support, incase it doesn't work try stepping up the XMP settings to 1333 and repeat for 1600, however those speeds aren't officially supported by the CPU and you do that on your own risk

16GB of RAM will not work with a dual core 1st gen CPU, it will only work with 1st gen quads.
