Hi there,
I have a new CPU - the T9300 mobile, ready to be put into my Inspiron 1720 laptop.
I have a question - I still need to get some Arctic Silver 5 and the Arcti Clean; but how necessary is it? Do I NEED to use it or can my laptop cope without?
Comments will be appreciated - thanks.
Regards,
Simon

you need a thermal goop... its doesnt have to be Atric Silver... but you need something as with out it you wont have a good connection between the CPU and Heat sink...thus you get a fried CPU quick.
You dont need the artic clean on the other hand. Just use 90%+ alcohol (the higher precentage the better)to clean all the surfaces and your all good. -
Yeah isopropyl alcohol and some type of thermal paste are a must. Some people will include some sort of thermal paste when you buy a cpu, but it depends, I'm not sure if intel retail box cpus have anything with them or not. Since you have to get something anyways I'd go ahead and get something good like MX-2 or arctic silver myself.

I agree with the above, the 486's were the last to really not require thermal goop, i was the only person putting it on in my area back then.
Modern cpu's can survive without it by downclocking themselves severely, but they don't like it at all. -
Arctic Cooling MX-2 and Tuniq TX-2 are also very good thermal compounds
You should use thermal compound on any recent cpu. It helps fill in the air pockets between the heatsink and the cpu.
Every heatsink and cpu is not perfectly flat, so when combined often air gaps appear. Any thermal compound is more conductive than air, so using a paste is definitely a step in the right direction.

I just upgraded to an x-9000 from a t-7500 and used OCZ Freeze , temps are way down on GPU and CPU , had to replace thermal paste on gpu as well ,temps dropped all around . I've used OCZ ON 3 BUILDS NOW ALWAYS BEEN PLEASED WITH RESULTS

Just make sure you don't over do the paste. You really only need a very tiny dollop of it - maybe a sphere half a cm in diameter. Probably less.
