Do you guys know where i should look for a nice (and cheap) 1X2gb ram module for my G1s? I live in Canada. Also, does it need to be a pc2-5400 200PIN ?

i just ordered a dimm from newegg - 2 gigs - 68.99 - came with a free 1 gig flash drive too - just got it yesterday - gonna put it in tonite when i get home

i also see they have this dimm:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820208341

that ones $10 cheaper (and you still get the flash drive)

ok - well i just popped my 2 gb dimm in - windows recognized it immediately, so thats good - but i ran the "vista experience" to see if it would boost my score - it actually LOWERED it - it went from a 4.8 down to a 4.7

im gonna run some 3dmark tests to compare the numbers to what i got last nite - ill post back in this thread with the results in a little bit

EDIT - maybe the dual channel processes really make a difference - but i cant imagine 2gb of dual channel would actually be faster (better) than 3gb of total ram

we'll see what happens with these 3dmark tests...

    Check buy.com, they have it for like $50 for 2 x 1GB...
all you need is DDR 200 pin SODIMM 667 MHz which is normally rated at pc2-5300. A pc2-5400 rated module would be the same as pc2-5300...

ok - well i ran the vista experience again and got the 4.8 i had before adding the extra gig of ram

after the 3dmark tests - it looks like my 05 scores went up by about 70, but my 06 scores went down a smidge

in the end, im not sure upgrading to 3gb was worth the extra money - i dont really see any noticeable difference (although i just installed simcity societies and that game chugs along with no problems on high settings - then again, i dont think it takes a powerhouse computer to run that game)

ill try to download the crysis demo when i get home tonite to run some further tests - but all in all, i dont see much of a difference (and according to benchmark tests, neither does the computer)

2x1GB in dual channel will be faster than 1+2 in single channel unless what you're doing can actually use more than 2GB RAM. Even Crysis doesn't need more than 2GB RAM, and 3DMark definitely uses less.

^ im wondering if i bought another 2gb stick (the exact same dimm) - even though the os would only recognize 3 gigs - would it then run in dual channel?

so it would be like 3gigs of ram running in dual channel? am i making any sense?

This is wrong and I don't know how many more times we will have to repeat it.
YOU DO NOT NEED SAME SIZE DIMMS TO RUN IN DUAL CHANNEL MODE IN A LAPTOP.

fascinating - i never knew this - and it looks like tom's hardware actually did some testing between dual channel and single channel - apparently, as far as gaming and benchmarks go, there wasnt much of a difference

their results showed that running more ram in single channel mode is usually more beneficial than running less ram in dual-channel mode

EDIT - probably should have posted some sort of link to the source:

    http://www.tomshardware.com/2007/10/17/parallel_processing/

the actual benchmarks are on the last 5-6 pages of that article

    Yes, it would....

but it would be called asynchronous Dual Channel and there is a bit of performance difference between sync & async.......

^ you know - im thinking i might get the 64-bit upgrade disc from ms for $10 - that would allow me to make use of all 4gb, and i wouldnt have to worry about sync and async issues

i just hope none of my programs get messed up in a 64-bit environment...
