    I have hp dv9548ca, spec’s here: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...c=us&dlc=en&product=3444206&rule=8120&lang=en

I would like to upgrade to 4GB of ram from the current 2GB. However I have no clue what type of ram my computer utilizes and what type to buy?

    Someone please tell me:

    1. What type of ram I need?
    2. Since I use my system for gaming, please advise on some reputable high performance sticks of ram I can purchase, not just some any!
    3. Where I can purchase? Remember I’m in Canada

Thanks in Advance and HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!

It seems the max of your motherboard is only 2GB. Your motherboard will not be able to handle the load of 4GB.

I understand, however everest Ultimate Edition, a program i trust says:
"Maximum Memory Amount :: 4GB" for my Motherboard,

HP Customer Service confirmed this for me, they simply stated that hp doesn't recommended you upgrade to 4GB because of stablity issues, which have resolved with their latest bios.

if you look at the spec link you posted, it says it only supports up to 2gb of ram, which you already have.

    Look for DDR2-667 PC2-5300/5400 200-pin Sodimm.

Laptop ram is just laptop ram(you cant do anything special with it some laptop BIOS) are limited so get memory from a brand that has a lifetime warranty(most do) and the cheapest price.

Look in the hot ram deals thread for some deals(listed towards the bottom of the first).

    To use/see 4GB you will need a 64bit OS.

Also most games are bottlenecked by the GPU so...

If you're really interested in getting 4GB RAM, I should suggest Corsair. You could probably find it online or at a local electronic store such as Best Buy, Circuit City or Fry's. Not too familar with what they have in Canada.

NCIX, Canada Computers, Infonec, MilestonePC(alll I can think of now) would sell the ram you need at much better prices than BB or Futureshop or theSource(circuit city).

After you buy the memory, make sure you test the modules with Memtest 86+(its a memory diagnostic tool) so if there is a problem with the sticks, it can be taken care of immediately.

Here is a great guide/thread that shows how to get/run memtest 86+(make sure you run it atleast overnight)
