What type of processor does your notebook have?
We need that info before we can help, if we can.
Not sure if the Dell 8600's processor is upgradeable. -
This is my processor
PROCESSOR, 80536, PENTIUM M DOTHAN, Pentium M Dothan, 1.6GHZ, 2 MEGB, 400FSB, PLASTIC GRID ARRAY, B1
Hope anyone can suggest something...
thanks -
Obiviously, upgrading the cpu is totally not easy if you havent upgrade any other notebook compoents, like RAM, HD, MiniPCI, etc.

Either of those should work. Your FSB is 533Mhz, as with all Pentium M processors. -
Then Inspiron 8600 uses the 855PM chipset which supports only the 400MHz FSB. The Pentium-M's the laptop supports are the original Banias (400MHz FSB, 1MB cache) and the version 1 Dothan (400MHz FSB, 2MB cache). The Dothans you want are the ones named 7x5. The fastest the 8600 can accept is the 2.1GHz Pentium M 765. You can check out Intel's Number Chart.
The 533MHz FSB Dothan's should actually work but the FSB remains at 400MHz, so the P-M 780 (2.26GHz) would only run at 1.7GHz. -
thanks for the response!!!! really cleared up a lot of stuff roaming in my head!!!
