I am looking for a external HD for my laptop. Needs to be 60gb+, 5400rpm, and have the ablitity to run without an external power source. Many drive are around 60gb and 5400rpm, but I have been reading horror stories about the drive needing more power then USB 2.0 can produce( aka the hd was build exceeding USB 2.0 requirements). Seems to be more common in laptops then desktops.

Anyone use a decent drive that doesn't need external power with a laptop?

Ummm...just about any external hard drive that's USB2.0 compatible will tell you if it'll run without an external power supply. Usually they're designated as "portable" or "laptop", along those lines. They're typically smaller in design and come in a slim package(since they usually use 2.5" hard drives).

Seagate makes some, as well as Lacie and many others.

Regarding USB HDs without an EXTERNAL POWER SUPPLY: Sandisk makes the Firelite. They go up to 100 GB. They work well and battery life is not sacrificed as much as others. Avoid the drives that use 2 USB ports to run.

I personally have a LaCie external mobile HDD (80GB 5400rpm USB2.0 & Firewire compatible). I have noticed that the quality of the drive is quite important if you are planning on carrying it around with your laptop (in my case at least) and would recommend getting one with a good robust design.
