I'm looking a gaming controller to play dota 2 but since I don't play on console and I've never owned a controller before so I don't know which controller I should get for my laptop. It can be either wired or wireless.
I'd like to spend ~$50, not sure how much a controller cost tho. I don't know if every controller will work on PC or not. I know Logitech makes controllers but not sure if they're good. I have Logitech mouse so a match controller would make a good pair.

Xbox One controller is the best in my opinion and it works with no problems

Second that, I prefer the Xbox One controller, its pretty ergonomic.

How would you play dota 2 with a controller? If you end up getting once I'd love to see how you play with one.

thanks for the input. But does the Xbox One controller work wireless on Windows? I've just shopped around on Amazon and see some of them are said to work wireless with Xbox One and wired on Windows.

@yayo685 I'd like to play Dark Souls with mouse and keyboard and DotA 2 with a controller. -
X360 controller all the way.

A good alternative is the 8bitdo Pro series, I have the limited edition Famicom version but they do Snes and NES colours too as well as regular Famicom:

It can use xinput over USB as well as generic input over bluetooth and the dpad is also much better than anything Microsoft can make. It's incredibly compact although the sticks aren't as nice as an XBox pad and R2 & L2 aren't analog. If you need a good dpad and face buttons over everything else then it's the one to get though, makes Microsoft pads feel cheap and nasty.
If you want a wireless pad with xinput then the XBox 360 or XBone pad may be your only options. Either way you'll have a long cable attached to the dongle which can be annoying, I cut and soldered mine.. Range is shorter (the cable acts like an antenna I think) but it's much more convenient. -
Xbox One or DualShock 4. The DualShock 4 requires a bit of setup but most games recognize the Xbox controller. Do yourself a favor and get the Covert Forces controller. I got mine on Amazon for 56 bucks. The shoulder buttons on the stock controller only click at the edge while these click across the whole button. It makes sure you actually hit the button when you need to.
Wired controllers always have less input lag than wireless ones. I would just buy a long USB extender if you need to use it wireless. The DualShock 4 works great since its Bluetooth and as an added bonus you can enable the trackpad on it for mouse control with the DS4 Tool software.
I bought this awhile back. It has built in controller maps for a lot of games that don't have controller support and even has built in support for the DS4 controller.

Go with XBox controllers. They are pretty much the "standard" for all games designed to work with controllers.
If you want wireless, go with XBox 360 Wireless for Windows controller. If you want wired, get an XBox 360 (or One) wired controller. It doesn't really matter if you get a controller for XBox 360 or XBox One, since they are so similar in design (and will function identically as a PC gaming controller). Personally, I would buy a used wired Xbox 360 controller, since they are so cheap ($15) and easy to find. No point in spending $50+ on a new accessory that will perform identically to a $15 one. -

just found this deal for the Convert Forces controller https://www.reddit.com/r/GameDeals/comments/3nui8l/newegg_xbox_one_covert_forces_controller_w_3545/ so I guess I might go with that one.

The Xbox One controller is more refined than the Xbox 360 controller. One massively awesome update is the responsiveness of the thumbsticks. Also the 360 wireless adapter breaks constantly, just check the reviews on them...
You can buy cheap or you can buy quality. 360 doesn't compare to the Xbox One controller, that's just about universally agreed upon.
