    Need advice on a "cool" cooler mod

    Ok so I purchased this notebook cooler http://www.thermaltake.com/product_info.aspx?PARENT_CID=C_00001403&id=C_00001404&name=Massive mm23+CS+&ov=n&ovid= and it's fantastic so far but I want to mod it with an 80mm fan just under my vga fan port. For anyone who owns an ASUS G50vt or similar notebook, you'll appreciate this mod :)
    The huge fan that is attached to this notebook cooler can be moved over to the right just enough to fit another smaller fan. So I purchased an 80mm fan which is rated for 12v and it has 3 wires attached to it. the notebook coolers huge fan is rated at 5v due to it being usb connected and usb max voltage is 5v if I'm not mistaken.
    So my question is this, how do I splice into the notebook coolers fan wiring to attach this additional fan. The three wires on the new 80mm fan are yellow, red, and black.

    I would appreciate any help with this and if it's a successful mod I will post pics asap.

    There's a good chance it won't work, because the 80mm fan needs 12v to start properly, and unless you wire in an AC adaptor or battery, you'll only get 5v to he fan, which probably won't be enough to get it turning.

    you coulld get a 5v 80mm fan just need to hunt it down, then i guess u gotta run the connetions in parallel. So i guess u gotta get the yellow and black ones to split to the oriiginial fan and ur extra fan. That way both the fans get 5v.

    I would consider blocking the air flow from just that area.. (tape, aluminum and / or other)

    Most coolers I have seen are in fact bottom feed.. which is a problem for you..

    I have a Zalman and even with the top of back 5 inches being solid.. that would only provide a partial solution for you.. so obstructiong the air flow for the area where the laptop expels hot air may help you some.

    You mean block the exhaust port? How will that help with cooling?

    I think he means block off select parts on the Zalman so that air only goes into your intake ports.

    I tried it with the 12v fan and it does turn, not as fast as it should I'm sure. Will undervolting the fan from 12 to 5volts damage anything?

    No.. Block the circle on your existing notebook cooler.. where

    See where it sits comfortably for you and make a circle an inch over sized and tape it down.. tin foil, aluminum and then glue or double sided tape maybe would work to keep it attached to the cooler..

    The would give the laptop fan a way to vent hot air out without having the laptop cooler forcing the air back into the laptop..

    I like you notebook cooler I am thinking about getting yours as it looks like it would move more air than my Zalman..

    I hope this made my thought a little more clear and sorry not to have been more clear last time..

    Please review the marked up PDF and let me know if it makes more sense to you.

    Good luck and please let everyone know how it works out.. if there is a decrease in heat and how much.. maybe 2" of obstruction would work better than 1"..

    Considering I marked up the mirror (wrong) side yes.. it would not work..

    But if one were to build a T upside down tape wall around that forced the air out to the side.. 3 walls.. and if someone wanted to be daring they could leave a vent and build and air dam to force the air out to the side instead of up into the laptop.. with the 3 wal design which would then force the hot air away from the laptop..

    If anyone has any interest I will mark up some directions.

    I don't think it will damage the fan. Too low a voltage usually just means that the motor either wouldn't start at all, or will turn slower/be easier to stop from resistance. Depending on the current draw of the 80mm fan in combination with the cooler fan, it may damage your USB power supply port, but that heavily depends on exactly how much current the combination is trying to pull out of the port, and I have no idea what kind of numbers we're talking about for that.

    Sorry im still confused. I thought the circular thing under the laptop was an air intake. blocking it would be bad if it is.

    I think his point is that his notebook, and I think he assumes or thinks yours as well, doesn't intake air from the bottom and blow it out the sides, but instead takes air in from the sides and blows it out the bottom, or maybe it takes air in some of the bottom vents and blows air out of the other bottom vents. In that case, since the laptop cooler (presumably) blows air up into the bottom of your notebook, it would interfere with the notebook trying to blow air out of the bottom. Of course, since you're already pulling the fan out of the thing, it should be fairly simple to flip it over and have it pull air from the top and exhaust it out the bottom... Of course, if it both intakes and exhausts from the bottom, you might have some problems.
