Hi,
My 3+ year old laptop died on me yesterday. Looks like the hard disk is gone. It works fine if I put another hard drive. Its a dell laptop and the hd is : Seagate Momentus 7200 SATA 500GB. Please find the attached image of the disk.![]()
I need a replacement for this. As SATA II is widely available over SATA, I'm not sure if my laptop supports SATA II. How do I identify this information. I don't have any booklets etc that I got with the laptop. Also what would be a decent price to invest on a similar hard disk if I have to buy today.
Thanks.

Your laptop supports SATA II drives. Pick up a new one from a store near you. All Seagate Momentus drives are SATA II. SATA is just a type of connector. PATA was the predecessor and SATA replaced it.
If your laptop is running well without issues and you don't feel that it will fail, continue using it with a new HDD. If you found yourself using very little HDD space, you could also go in for an SSD to give you a boost in performance. -
Tsunade_Hime such bacon. wow
Any laptop made in the past 5-6 years supports SATA 2, and older than that (up to 2006) were SATA 1, which SATA 2 works in a SATA 1 laptop, just at SATA 1 speeds.

All SATA II and SATA III drives are backwards compatible with SATA I standard.
Something like this, maybe:
Newegg.com - Hitachi GST Travelstar 0S03563 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 2.5" Internal Notebook Hard Drive Bare DriveJOSEA likes this. -
