Since my Minecraft server is dead cause of HDD failure, i was thinking of investing in a small yet snappy SSD.
My favourite comp. tech supplier on the net, Komplett.no seems to have discontinued the Samsung SSD 470 so my next best bet in the same pricerange is the PNY Performance SSD 60gb.
But im worried about two things.
First that it uses Sandforce SF-1222 and second, it says its capable of read / write of 285 / 275 MB/s.
The closest competitor (yet more expensive) is the Intel SSD 320 series 40gb, but it is smaller and its also slower with only 200 / 45 MB/s read write.
Both are Sata2 drives cause my Nvidia Ion board cant do Sata3.
Any help is appreciated, and if i culd get them quick i might be able to order today so it ships early Monday.

SF? Yeah, be worried (enough that you don't buy one). And yeah, the PNY seems like it too uses SF 'tech'.
The smallest SSD I could recommend is the 320 120GB Series (much prefer the 160GB or larger though).
The M4 is also a contender - even though it is SATA3, it should still be seemlessly compatible with your system.
I would recommend setting up your system like this:
See:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/har...rades/608752-hdd-partitioning-help-500gb.html
Read that thread starting with my post #3 to move the Users folder to the D: (or any partition you want) drive (which in your case would be your mechanical HDD, I'm assuming).
Good luck. -
Its gonna be a server, and it will only server Minecraft with the linux distro called MineOS+.
The PNY one is priced at 120 US Dollars for 60gb while the Crucial M4 64gb is priced at 150 US Dollars.
If 30 bucks gives me a more reliable SSD even with Sata3 il take it. xD -

I think il go with the Crucial M4 drive.
Thanks for posting. -

How much capacity does the MineOS+ O/S need (including the Minecraft installation)?
If it needs considerably less than 60GB, then consider formatting your SSD to use as little of it as you can get away with (for example: 25-30GB).
If you are able to do this, then the performance of the system will be sustained as long as possible (not to mention lower the WA on the SSD to a minimum too). This is especially important on non-TRIM aware O/S's such as Linux.
For the most responsive system (sustained over time...): get the biggest SSD you can afford (250GB or larger) and format it to use less than half of it's capacity (100GB or so...). Yeah, it may seem like 'overkill' - but this will be the last upgrade you do to this system (storage-wise). -
According to Wikipedia the Linux kernel supported TRIM since February 2010, as long as i enable it and format to a filesystem that supports it.
MineOS+ would actually work pretty good with 1gb, so a 64gb SSD will be overkill.
Its only command line with the option to enable a GUI if needed. -

Yeah, according to Wiki Mac O/S also supports TRIM - yet it doesn't (unless you use their SSD's).
If all you really need is 1GB capacity to run MineOS+ (complete) then I would really format/use only around 10GB of your new SSD to run this server.
This should be an optimal use of an SSD (at this time...). -
Okay thanks for all the advice.
Its ordered and the first thing il do before remaking the Minecraft server is to update the firmware if needed.
Hopefully it will run perfectly after that. -
Definitely update to FW0009. The good thing about the M4 is that if you forget to flash the FW before installing the OS, you can always do so afterwards without having to erase the drive. Also, the M4 has decent garbage collection even if TRIM isn't supported by the OS.
Need advice: PNY Performance SSD 60gb
