I have a Dell 1501 with one expresscard slot. I am looking to record music through a mixer to my laptop. I write music on MIDI based programs as well, so I like the Soundfont feature of Sound Blasters. So I am supposing I can get:
-an expresscard sound card
-USB or
-USB-to-PCMCIA + PCMCIA card
Any advice is appreciated.

The only expresscard solution I can think of is the Creative Xi-Fi, but it's really just an SB Live! 24-bit inside. If you really want to record audio, you need to get an external solution. Internal cards suffer from the electromagnetic emissions from inside the computer, hence why most of the professional solutions are external-only.

does that include usb?
-
go for external solutions for the hardcore recorder. Take a look at the M-Audio Firewire 410. its expensive and uses firewire but it is very very nice.

I suppose I should add I do not have a firewire port and am looking for something under $100
Also, my mixer is a Behringer Eurorack UB1002 -
There is a maudio usb interface for 129.99 msrp so look for street prices. and the audigy 2 nx usb module which is discontinued.

Is the xmod any good for recording?
EDIT: actually, that Audigy 2 NX USB does look pretty appetizing. -
Would it be a good idea to get an SB USB card for Sound fonts and a different USB card for recording?
Need good notebook card for recording
