Yes - you can upgrade your optical drive. You just need to first buy a slim DVD burner (try newegg).
On the bottom of your notebook, under the optical drive, there are one or two screws - take these out, then slide the drive out. Stick the new one in, and put back the screws. You may have to swap benzels on the drives, if they are different.

I'd recommend the NEC 6650 sold on NewEgg. It is a very good burner. Plus I think HP uses NEC drives.

Zazonz - HP uses Toshiba optical drives - and let me tell you, the are quite terrible. No burning problems, but very noisy, too much vibration. -
I worked on a HP not too long ago and it used a NEC drive, but was not a v2000z. They often change manufacturers.

Will my front face thats on my v2000z dvd drive fit on the nec burner? and will i have any problems with the setting on the drive that makes it cbs,sl,master settings?

You won't have any problems with the slave/master issue - however, before you buy the drive, make sure that you can remove the benzel on the drive you currently have in your notebook. It should come off. Here is a review that illustrates how to take the drive out. The benzel is different than a standard one, so you will have to put the benzel on the new drive. Make sure you can remove the benzel!
