I just got my Lenovo y580 today along with my crucial m4 256 gb msata ssd. what I would like to do is get everything from my hdd onto the ssd and then use it as the primary drive.

what I have done so far : the ssd is physically in the laptop, it shows up in BIOS, device manager and in the Intel rapid storage manager. I have also created a backup image of my hdd and it is stored on my hdd.

the problem is that the ssd doesn't even show up in my computer so I think im doing something wrong . . . my troubleshooting skills are not that great when it comes to ssds, the only things I tried was go into BIOS and confirm that it is in "AHCI" mode I think that's what it is, and tried to disable and re-enable the ssd . . . . no success and kinda stuck

At 1st you look like a computer ignoramus, that most on NBR will avoid in order to not get in trouble.

Yet you were OK with puling off the keyboard to put in the mSATA SSD?

    So interesting.

My limited free advice is be very careful going forward as mistakes on this type of stuff tend to be very very expensive.

Another useful thought is that free advice all too often isn't.

Yet another is to do posts that won't refrain experienced posters from saying something useful.

In a quixotic way, maybe this post by me will help get the ball rolling? :)

Edit: 1) This might also get some useful response in the IdeaPad subsection of the Lenovo forum. 2) FWIW I almost got a Y580, liked what I learned of it, and hope it does well for you.

Right click on Computer, select Manage, select Disk Management and Initialize the new disk.

    Hope this helped.

Not recommended (cloning; by me) but your call - others (or a quick search) can give their recommendations for freeware cloning software, but a clean install is highly recommended.

    Good luck.
