I need help deciding on an external hard drive to purchase. I have absolutely no idea what to buy. It should be at least 250 GB and not be too expensive. Firewire would be nice but usb will work for me too. Please give suggestions. I was looking to pay uner 75 bucks for it

Are you looking at the smaller 2.5' laptop drives or are you fine with 3.5' destop drives?

If you can budget for around $100 then your selection can be greatly increased.

If you go 3.5' route, then I would recommend a internal hard drive with a external enclosure. In the long run it'll be cheaper. Plus internal drives have a slightly longer warranty.

i'd rather have one of the 2.5' drives and i might be willing to pay as much as 100 bucks. Plus its for a laptop if that changes anything

I would just get an Internal 2.5" HDD, and get an external case for like $5.
I run with WD Scorpio Blues, 2x 250GB and a 500GB inside my machine.
I always liked those, I bought a few and so did my friend and no problems so far.

Just pick any ext case, I got mine on the street in Beijing. like $2-$3 or something. Just remember the USB cable needs power too, so it will take up 2 USB ports (one for data the other for power).

Unless you get an external power supply case, but then I would rather get a big 3.5" HDD as you already have to carry a power adapter.

I'd agree with what kingcodez said bout going w/ an external and an enclosure.

If you're in US, I'd suggest newegg.
Not affiliated but a happy customer.

Here are a few that are at least 250GB and are under $75.00.

This list on NewEgg pretty much filtered everything you're looking for. You may want to check the assortment of brands there all priced $50-$75 and have a capacity between 240GB-320GB.

    You can also checkout:
The Western Digital 250GB My Passport Essential which is going for $60.00 al WalMart.

I also personally like the Buffalo HD-PF250U2 MiniStation TurboUSB Portable Hard Drive - 250GB, also for $59.97. This has shock protection and has a feature where the USB cord wraps around the device. I would have gotten this if I hadn't been using Seagate Maxtor Basics and another portable HD I got made.

    Hope it helps...
