You need 64bit version of Windows. Vista or Window 7 x64 will be fine, but I prefer the latter.
Seems like you can't upgrade your notebook to 8GB:
Quote:
"Up to 4GB Dual Channel 667MHz DDR2"
From here:
http://www1.euro.dell.com/uk/en/home/Laptops/xpsnb_m1730/pd.aspx?refid=xpsnb_m1730&cs=ukdhs1&s=dhs
So the best you can do is buy 2x 2GB DDR2 667 PC2-5300 200 pin modules.
Good luck. -
I think it depends on the chipset in your 1730 whether you can have up to 8GB of Ram.

But 4GB would be the best way to go
Also, if you have 4GB+ you will need a 64Bit operating system to be able to use it. -

Yes, tell us what you are doing before buying up to 8GB RAM. It is best reserved for special needs.
@tilleroftheearth: And 8GB RAM works for the M1730. Ignore those reports that says "Up to 4GB Max". It's always better to ask owners who own them, that is just the standard amount that will give. Look at my sig. -
