I have a budget of 50-60 dollars to spend on a SSD. I have a 10$ off coupon for anything on newegg, so I'm taking advantage of it. Here are the competing SSDs

    1.SanDisk SDSSDP-128G-G25 2.5" 128GB SATA III for 60$ ( SanDisk SDSSDP-128G-G25 2.5" 128GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) - Newegg.com)
    2. Mushkin Enhanced MKNSSDCR120GB-7 2.5" 120GB SATA III for 65$ ( Newegg.com - Mushkin Enhanced MKNSSDCR120GB-7 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD))
    3. Team Group DARK L3 T253L3120GMC101 2.5" 120GB SATA III for 63$ ( Newegg.com - Team Group DARK L3 T253L3120GMC101 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD))
    4. PNY XLR8 SSD9SC120GMDF-RB 2.5" 120GB SATA III for 60$ ( PNY XLR8 SSD9SC120GMDF-RB 2.5" 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) - Newegg.com)

    Which one should I get?

Honestly, save up for a larger drive. You won't regret it.

If the reason you want one of these is to put it in an external enclosure (USB3.0) to use as a USB key, then the SanDisk would be my choice.

If you actually want to install an O/S and programs... keep saving until you can buy at least a 240/256GB drive (last gen, larger nand geometry) or 480/512GB (current gen/smaller nand and/or denser nand packages). And don't think you're just getting capacity either...

Any SSD you buy and you don't OP it by at least 25% (I recommend 30%...), is money well wasted (if performance is your goal).

    Good luck.

I would also recommend at least a 240-256GB SSD. Performance will be better overall and you run out of space more quickly than you'd think. I'd only put a 120-128GB SSD in a netbook, HTPC, or old laptop where the bottleneck will be the other system components.

This SanDisk SSD has: 4KB Random Read - Up to 7,000 IOPS and 4KB Random Write - Up to 2,000 IOPS - this is some bad joke.

Out of the drives in the poll I would choose the Mushkin. Based on well known and tested SandForce 2200 series controller, IOPS of 90000/85000 (4K RR/RW).

I stand by my recommendation for the SanDisk drive - for use as a 'USB key'. ;)

I'd ignore all of those choices and save for a 250 GB Samsung 840 EVO. Generally you can get them for around $150, and they pop up on sale all the time for $130.

Only for the price and size, the PNY Optima 240GB at Newegg. $110 minus $20 rebate and your $10 off gets you down to $80. Newegg.com - PNY Optima SSD7SC240GOPT-RB 2.5" 240GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

A review: PNY Optima 240GB SSD Review - A Low Cost SSD for the Mainstream at $90

It's not a top performer. It's a value drive. It's got Micron 20nm ,128-bit die flash and the sequential write speed is not great in smaller drives (120-256GB). The controller is the new Silicon Motion SM2246EN 4-Channel design. More channels = more parallelism = better performance. The positive of the 4 channel design is low power consumption. Reliability can't be known yet. But the early user reviews on Newegg are very positive. 1 negative out of 34 for a failed drive. (30 - 5 egg, 3 - 4 egg) If money was the bottom line and I could swing another $20 only, I might give this drive a try.

what is the reason you always recommend OP by 30% if Samsung themselves recommend only 10%?

Also, take a look at my scenario.

I have two 1 TB Samsung 840 Evos

Drive 1 = Used space is only 50 GB after installing all my programs + Games. Free space = 795 GB. OP = 10%

Drive 2 = Used space is only 342 GB with all my other data. Free space = 496 GB. OP = 10%

so having so much free space, isn't that like OP as well and I should be good with a 10% OP not more?

Tiller recommends 30% based on his real world experience and testing. Feel free to overprovision by as much or as little as you want - it's your hardware and time.

I totally understand. My point was rather than forcing him to repeat himself and type out something for the umpteenth time, why not look for one of his many many already existing explanations?

Do note though that currently, I am recommending 150GB for the C:\ drive partition vs. 100GB previously. Why? Because things change! (Windows updates, program updates, Suite updates have all increased in size and I had run into a few examples (client's systems) that 100GB was not cutting it anymore.

I have read many of your posts. you are Dr.. SSD there is no doubt about that.

One last question, if my SSDs have over 50% free space, would changing my OP from 10 to 30% make any difference or no point in that?

thanks a lot for taking time to post those links. I will read them

No, but I didn't say that.

And Win8.1 update 1 is (at least over Win7... sigh). ;)

    To OP:

None of the choices in your poll are anything to write home about, not by a long stretch. Personally, I'd stay away from all of them.

Put aside a few more bucks and buy a decent drive. Crucial M550 and Toshiba Q series Pro - if you absolutely must have a small 120GB range SSD - would be my preferred choices. Both are available through NewEgg.

    Happy shopping.
