I have never owned a laptop and this one belongs to my brother, who asked me to upgrade the standard 512 mb of memory by 1GB. I have installed memory in desktops but not laptops, and I was told by an Office Depot technician that it is easier with laptops. He showed me the small cover hiding the RAM (supposedly) but when I removed it instead of RAM cards I saw a metal box with more screws and a large connector, which I suspect was actually the HDD. There are no other small covers on the back, so it would appear that the larger cover must be removed to get to the RAM. Before I take that cover off I wondered if anyone here knows this model and if I do need to open the larger cover or if the small compartment needs to have the metal cover opened.

    thanks for any help.

Thanks, I found that same page in a Google search and it didn't help. I think I will just go ahead and remove the larger cover and see if it reveals the memory. There are several videos on YouTube showing how to install memory on a laptop, but none on an Averatec 6100, and the ones I saw showed a small cover removed to directly reveal the memory modules. Don't know why Averatec did things differently.
