Quick sum up:
I have a Gateway ML3108 with a Sempron socket S1. I tried to upgrade to Turion MK36 and to a Turion X2 TL50.
- with the MK36 the laptop works fine if I don't put ram in the first memory slot
- with the TL50 the CPU is recognised by the bios but can't load windows. Instead it displays the following message: "FATAL ERROR !!! Please change CPU!!!"
I suggested that my motherboard and the one in the MX3410 were similar but some of the forum participants have disagreed with my opinion.
I found the specsheet of my mobo and I was not wrong it is the same as the MX3410 and it does support AMD Turion processors. This is the link for the mobo:
So what am I doing wrong? and are both the MK36 and TL50 faulty?HTML:http://assets.gateway.com/s/Mobile/2007/Apache/4006171R/4006171Rsp2.shtml
P.S. I retreived the MK36 and the TL50 from faulty Acer laptops (Aspire 5050, and 5100)

Perhaps you've tried this and this is a dumb solution... try reinstalling windows (or some or other form of linux) with the new cpu and all ram in place... it may be some sort of fixed installation issue with windows that doesn't want to recognize the new cpu (activation is often locked on hardware!
Just my two (worthless) cents -
Have you already upgraded to the latest version of the BIOS..??
-
I already have the latest bios availavabe from the Gateway website. I contacted Gateway for help and their answeris "we don't offer assistance for CPU upgrade... you should contact the motherboard manufacturer"
Problem: I don't know the manufacturer of my mother board -
You can find out the model or code-name of the motherboard and then find out its manufacturer by downloading CPUz -- Mainboard page....
-
CPUZ, EVEREST, PC Wizard, SIW what else... all show my motherboard manufacturer as Gateway.
when I opened the laptop for the upgrade I noticed that the PCB had a HannStar logo. So is HannStar the manufacturer of my mothrboard?
I chatted again with another Gateway technicien and the info he gave me about the motherboard is: UMA 1394.
Is UMA a hardware manufacturer? what's there web address? can't find it as I don't know what the acronym UMA stands for. -
I doubt the motherboard would have been developed by Hannstar....They make more of LCDs and its parts....
UMA - Unified Motherboard Architecture....
1394 must be realted to IEEE 1394, maybe..!! -
I'm saying this because I've seen their logo on a desktop motherboard and on and an Acer laptop motherboard (travelmate 2350 series if I'm not wrong)
The 1394 doesn't stand for FireWire. I had the same initial thought as you but the motherbord does not have an IEEE1394 socket.
I think Gateway is tolking rubbish as they are using the UMA 1394 reference also for their intel based motherboards. for their Celeron and Core2Duo laptops.
Need more suggestions regarding my failed CPU upgrade
