My hard drive died and I am looking to upgrade to a larger capacity HD. I currently have a 100GB and would like to upgrade to a 200-300GB drive. I am hoping to just swap out the dead drive and install the new one and load my software back on.

I have been primarily a MAC user but have my Dell laptop for gaming so I am very sketchy in my knowledge of what to buy. I have done a lot of research and have only served to confuse myself with all of the options. I know this is going to sound idiotic but is this what I want?

    200.0 GB SATA/150 5400 RPM

Also, I am looking for a 2.5" not a 3.5" right? I actually talked to a tech guy who was going to sell me a 3.5 ".

I would really appreciate a specific recommendation from someone as to what drive I could get that is reliable.

    Thanks for any help!

If you have a Pentium M processor, you need a 2.5" IDE drive.

But I think you have a Core Solo, Core Duo, or later. That means a 2.5" SATA is what you need. SATA150 actually. So yes, you are right.

MACs and PCs use the same hard drives, so you know more than you think.

Personally, I like to get my drives from Seagate or Hitachi. Check out NewEgg or CD-W for the best service and prices IMHO.

Yes, you are looking for a 2.5" laptop sata harddrive
Any of the harddrives in this link will work fine in your laptop:

I personally recommend the Hitachi 7K200 series harddrive. It is 200Gb has a 7200 rpm rotational speed and a 16mb buffer. This harddrive will speed up your system. It is the fastest notebook harddrive in the market. It is only $140 after rebate, which is not a bad deal.

If you are still looking for a 5400rpm harddrive, I recommend the 250Gb WD scorpio

Just please do not get a Samsung hard drive. I have had nothing but bad experiences and drive failures with that company.

    Dear Greg and K-TRON,

Thank you SO MUCH! I really appreciate your getting back to me with this so quickly. After looking at all of the choices on NewEgg I decided to splurge a bit and go with the Hitachi 7K200. In the long run it seems dependable and pretty speedy. Most of the reviews were impressive on it.

I should have come here for advice first. I am so surprised at the "tech help" I received that was totally wrong even after I gave detailed specs on my laptop. Luckily I had a feeling something wasn't right before I ordered.

I now have to dig up my disks from Dell and hope they are disks I can load software off of; not just recovery disks. I really don't want to wait any longer to install as I have been without my laptop for 2 weeks and am going through withdrawal.

Thanks again for all of the help.
