I need to replace a faulty hard drive for my Dell Vostro 1500 and I need help! I've never bought a hard drive and haven't been able to find much information on it. The hard drive that my laptop came with was 250GB, I believe, and I definitely want to go up, but I was told I need to make sure my laptop can handle more capacity. Also I need to know the specifications I should be looking for... From what I gather it should be a SATA, 2.5 inch internal hard drive but I want to make sure before I purchase something. Also, are there any brands I should avoid? I really appreciate any help that can be offered. Please excuse my ignorance, I am not exactly a technically inclined person, but I am trying to learn!

What is your budget and what is the minimum capacity you require or would like?

If your computer is less than 5 yrs old, any SATA HD will work.

    What is your budget?

    In order of performance:

    1) Seagate Momentus XT Hybrid 500GB 7200 RPM HD

    2) Hitachi 7K500 500GB 7200 RPM HD

    3) WD Scorpio Blue 500GB 5400 RPM HD

Reverse the above to put in order of ascending price.

The XT is highly recommended and will give your notebook a noticeable boost in performance - if the price is within your expected budget. Any of these HD's will also give better performance than your original drive if its over 2 years old.

    Good luck.

Also consider the WD5000BEKT, a little faster than Hitachi 7K500.

Last time I checked it was $72.
