Hey everyone, I am new to the boards so please forgive me if this has already been posted (I did search for duplicates, but to no avail). I recently dropped my HP DV6500t laptop on the ground and now Ubuntu refuses to boot and won't reinstall. I put the laptop up to my ear and have confirmed that it is probably due to the hard drive being broken (I can hear the servo struggling).

I was wondering if there was a replacement drive comparable to the (now discontinued) Toshiba MK2035GSS that I could use? I'd really like to get the machine back up and running as soon as I can. A larger sized drive would be a plus. Thanks for looking and have a great one! :D

Does the HDD show up in the BIOS ??

If not, then you do need a new HDD, and you can connect that drive externally, then use a recovery software to probably recover the data. (If the data is necessary)

Check out this post and this thread, and let us know what sort of HDD you need, your budget, upgrade/downgrade/the same ?? etc etc....

    Andy,

Thanks for your quick response! Yes, the drive is toast. I'd like something comparable to my older Toshiba drive, its speed was good under Linux but horrible under Vista. I'd like to upgrade if possible, to around 320GB. Do you think that the Western Digital Scorpio WD3200BEVT 320GB 5400 RPM 8MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s will work as a replacement?

Yes, it will work. I own it, and it is a very good, fast, quiet drive.
A.T. some charts on Tomshardware, it is said to have a high Max Power Consumption....

You can also look into the Hitachi 5K320, and the Seagate 5400.5....

The Seagate 7200.3 is a 320GB 7200RPM HDD, is probably available for about $130 at Zipzoomfly (in the US)....which is very fast, even for vista.

EDIT: Here is a small chart, depicting the Power Consumptions of a few 320GB 5400RPM drives.

If you run your notebook more on battery power, the Seagate 5400.5 and the Hitachi 5K320 are better !!

Thanks for the heads up on consumption. I do spend quite a bit of time lazing about the house on battery power :D, so maybe I'll go with the Seagate 5400.5. It has a lower price and longer warranty. Thanks Andy!
