So, I've never really been RAM-shopping before, and I want to make sure I get the right sticks.
    http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/products/Memory_Upgrades/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&sku=A2885432

That's the memory Dell recommends, but I was hoping to buy two 4 gig sticks (or just 1 4 and leaving 1 two, is that possible?).

Can someone find me, or tell me where to find, similar ram with the right speed (current ram is 1066, if it's a 4 gig stick, 1333 is fine too) that will fit and work nicely in my brand new M17x?

    Thanks.

Newegg is a good place to go. The prices are competitive and the user ratings are pretty reliable. And if 1333 is fine, definitely go with it since its faster than 1066.

    1066

    1333

    1333

    Also Tigerdirect.com will have it.

If you're uncomfortable picking out memory from a retailer's list another option is to go directly to the memory manufacturer's website (e.g. Crucial, Kingston, etc.).

You simply identify your laptop by clicking through the options and they will recommend specific memory modules which will be compatible with your laptop. With this info, you could then go back to your retailer's list to look for the ones you want.

Why do you need that much memory? Are you maxing out your current 4GB of memory? Unless you require memory for work or graphics (not gaming), you probably don't need that much memory. It's quite expensive now, 8GB will probably set you back $500+ (on sale from Newegg), so make sure you need it before you invest that amount first.

For starters, the M17X uses the PM45 chipset, which can only use 1066MHz DDR3 memory. You will get absolutely zero performance boost by using 1333MHz memory.

And as others have said, is it really worth the upgrade? 4GB is plenty for any game. The only reason you might want more is if you do a lot of CAD work, in which case the M17X would be a questionable laptop to begin with.
