I have a Presario V6101us notebook with an AMD Sempron processor 3400+(1.59GHz,480 MB of ram according to the info in my control panel). I am running music software, and I wanted to know if I can upgrade the processor to a AMD Athlon 64 2800 or an Intel Pentium 4 2.8GHz? If this is possible, I need to upgrade my ram aswell. Unsure of the difference between DDR2,DDR3 and so on. The ram I know can be upgraded with no problem but the Processor I am stuck. What's involved, can I do it myself? I am running Sonar 6 XL music program incase I luck up and come across someone in the same boat who can answer the tech questions. Prvt msg is fine if you have the time. THX

Your laptop uses ddr2 memory, which runs at 667MHZ, which translates to ddr2 PC5300. You should be able to upgrade to 2Gb of memory without a problem. I do not know if your notebook supports 4Gb.
This is the memory you want to get.

You cannot upgrade from an AMD to an Intel, it is impossible. They use different sockets.
The memory upgrade will do a lot for your system, if it is still slow, I recommend getting a new harddrive for it. Your laptop uses the SATA interface, so any of these harddrives will work. You would want to get a high density 250Gb or 320Gb 5400rpm harddrive, as they are the same speed as the 100-200Gb 7200rpm disk drives.

    Presario V6101us specifications

Technically you could swap in a Turion X2 CPU if you're up for the task but good luck finding the CPU at a tolerable price. The service guide on hp.com will walk you through it. If you've never installed a CPU before, even in a desktop system, this probably isn't for you. It will also thoroughly void your warranty.

Upgrading RAM is easy though. Consider going straight to 4GB RAM, which will work but 32-bit Vista will only let you use 3.25GB of that at best. Buy a pair of Crucial 1GB or 2GB DDR2-667 SODIMMs. That will provide a dramatic performance improvement.

You already have an 80GB 5400RPM HD, so unless you need more space I'd keep it.
