Hey guys, 1st post here :) . I am curious as to whether or not it's possible to swap out the B800 celeron in my Acer aspire 5349-2635 for maybe a i7-2720qm. I took the back case off, and the cpu is not soldered on, it's just clamped down with way too much crappy thermal compound and the heatsink. I know the chipset is an intel HM65, and that chipset supports the i7-2720. I know the TDP of the B800 is 35w, so im not sure this board will put out enough voltage for the 45w 2720qm.

When I took the back case off I noticed that the cooling system only has 1 heatpipe coming off the cpu, so it's not meant for heavy duty cooling.

Any input is greatly appreciated, as I want to make this walmart cheapy as beastly as possible.

I know someone in here has some input. I just don't want to waste ~$180 if there isn't a good chance it would work.

Physically, it looks like it would match, what is the chipset in your Acer, also you could look for computers with the same chassis but an i7 if possible. That would answer the questions whether it can handle the extra heat. I'd also run something like prime95 for a while and check what max temps you get. This will also help to determine if it can handle the extra heat.

Chipset is HM65 express. I just don't know if this model can handle the 45w 2720qm vs the 35w b800 it came with.

Also, I am curious if the new 2720qm did boot inside the machine, would that allow me to use faster ram than the 1066 it came with?

I believe it'll work. The HM65 support SB, and as long as you use good thermal paste, it shouldn't overheat.

I'm with mister mischief on this one, but post your temps running prime95 before you do anything else. If your CPU is toasty as in 80C+, then i'd hold off on the upgrade to an i7 and maybe go for a 35W TDP core i instead if you're still set on upgrading the CPU.

EDIT: Oh yeah and make sure you dust the heatsink before running prime95.

I'm hoping it will work. It would be awesome, especially when combined with the 128gb m4 I just purchased. There is a guy on ebay willing to let me try out a 2720qm ES w/ 8mb cache as he agreed to take it back if it doesn't work. I'm getting pretty excited actually :D
