I'm looking to get a new home laptop. I will be using it for Office applications, email, and web browsing. I don't do a lot of multimedia, but I still would like a full HD screen.
I don't know where to start with processor speed and memory. I do think I would like an SSD. What processing speed would you recommend? I hate sluggish boot up and application loading.

Well, for your uses, the specific CPU and RAM doesn't really matter; anything modern will be more than powerful enough to handle your cases. Really the only important specs are the display (get at least 1080p for anything decent) and the storage drive (get a SSD if possible with your budget).
Boot times and application startup are I/O-bound, so the biggest boost you can give would be to use a SSD. CPU choice won't have a meaningful impact on those two things. -

Welcome to the forums.
It's a jungle out there when it comes to personal computer tech ...it changes quickly.
In your place, I'd look for a Core i3-6100U or a Core i5-6200U. Those are the most recent Intel processors, dual-core, and suited for a notebook. They have plenty of power for the applications you listed. Also look for 8GB of RAM; and a ~250GB or larger SSD.
Verify the system is listed as being expandable to 16GB of RAM. If you want the notebook to last a while - you never know, your needs might change, and it's worth having a system that can keep pace with you.
