    Hello everyone.

I have an Xotic Sager NP8170/Clevo P170HM Review - Specs, Performance and Benchmarks

My Radeon 6990M on it recently fried and I need to replace it. I'm looking to replace it with a cheap card bought from eBay.

I was thinking either this: Clevo Alienware NVIDIA GTX 560M w Heatsink | eBay

    or this: Dell Alienware M17x HD6990M AMD 2GB GDDR5 OC w M17x R3 4 Heatsink | eBay

But I have one concern. Here's my question: are graphics card essentially one in the same? A GTX560M pulled from an Alienware, for example, will work with a Sager? I'm worried about not getting the right fit for my computer.

I would like to fix my issue in the cheapest way possible. Buying a replacement from the manufacturer is double the cost of what's on eBay, so that's why I ask :(.

Thank you very much for your help.

Hmm... It should... I've been tried AMD FirePRO M5950 and M4000 from Dell on my Acer - worked great.

Wow, that sounds mad, but I might give it a shot if I can. The problem is finding an oven. I live in Japan where such things are basically unheard of, but I may give it a shot. I'm not too confident in my abilities to bake a video card, though, in which case I'd still like to know what kind of card I can buy second-hand that will work in my computer... hmmm

    Thanks for the help.

You need to find a clevo card, dell cards will not work in a clevo.

whatever you do dont do what a young lad done about 4 years ago and followed the steps except for one important part, he used a microwave and almost burnt his house down :D and then came back complaining it didnt work. felt quite sad (actually i was wetting myself with laughter) explaing you dont put metal in a micro.

i thought i was right but i wasnt 100%. thanks for clarifying.

Thanks for the help, and sorry to bother again, but do you think this card: Clevo Alienware NVIDIA GTX 560M w Heatsink | eBay

will fit in my computer? I'm worried because it's from a different model Clevo 15" laptop, but my computer is a 17". I assume it would be the same, but I don't know about the heatsink configuration.

    Thanks once again.

All modern big gaming laptops are MXM 3.0b which a 560M and your 6990M both are, but if it will actually POST being an Alienware card vs a Clevo card is a completely different story. That and you might need to buy a different heatsink as you are going from an AMD card vs Nvidia card.

If I take my current 6990m card out now, won't the heatsink come out with it? I'm a little confused about that. This card on ebay has the heatsink already attached to it. I thought it would be a fair switch of taking out my 6990m (which has heatsink attached) and putting in the 560m (with heatsink attached). Am I wrong on this?
