A simple question, from a simplistic point of view, probably answered before!![]()
So here it goes...
Will Penryn processors be able to be replaced by Nehalem ones, on the existing systems, since they both use the same 45nm technology?
-
Really can't say right now.
But Triple Channel, on-die memory controller, and main: FSB is replaced by QuickPath -- So, No, Nehalem CPUs won't work on current mobos.... -

there is a Physical difference in pin layout, old 775 will not fit in the 1366 procesor pin sockets, and vice versa. So, there's no such luck. but...you will get the old technology alot cheaper once the new stuff kicks in...which means you can still get a kick-*** system (less than year old tech) for a nice price.
-
I'm banking on a price drop on c2ds as well. -
Oh well. I was hoping the same thing as permka...

Nehalem laptop processors(clarksfield and auburndale) will not use Quick Path Interface. Instead they will use DMI(currently used to communicate between NB and SB).
But architecture and pin count(1156) are different and so they are not backwards compatible.
I believe clarksfield will make quad core mainstream.Auburndale with built in gfx will take care of low end. -

Don't hold your breaths guys. Nehalem for laptops is due second half of next year.
-
but the thing is, intel's only releasing high end chips in nov, and only x58 support them. mainstream chips will arrive in second half 09 -
