Has anyone else heard about a new "laptop chip" (whatever that is) that is supposed to come out "sometime in 2009?" All that I have heard about it is what my sources (cousins) at University of Washington have told me, which is only that there is supposed to be this "laptop chip" that will revolutionise laptops.
Practical application- should one put off buying a new laptop until this thing comes out?

Ask yourself: Do I need a laptop? If the answer is yes, then buy one. There's always 'some new chip that's gonna revolutionize...'

There is always a new chip that is coming out. Here's the thing... if you are always waiting to get the perfect cpu, you'll never going to get it because as soon as that perfect one comes out, you'll realize that within 3 months there will be a more perfect one.
Take a pick, choose one and be happy with it for at least 3-4 years.

Wow that is so vague. As the others have said, buy things when you need them. New advances are around the corner, the moment you buy something it is already obsolete, so don't worry.

I know it's vague. I believe that I mentioned that indirectly in my post with the words " all that I have heard..."

This is true...especially with electronics. I just bought an iphone 3g back in November, now they are coming out with a new one in June. ;)

2 years ago I bought a gateway mt6451 for 799.00 with a turion tl-50 1.6ghz, integrated graphics, pata hdd 5200 rpm, and vista home basic.

Yesterday I bought an ASUS x5 for 899.00 with a c2d 2.13 ghz oc'd to 2.4, dedicated geforce 9800 gs, sata 7200 rpm hdd and 64 bit vista.

    What a difference 2 years and 100 bucks make. ;) :D

Unless they're coming out with Chaogate processors in the next two years (in which case I'd spend the time til it was released drooling rather than using computers lol), I'd just put it down to them blowing smoke and get whatever you currently want/need...

Any so-far-publicly-unannounced revolutionary technology won't be out for a couple years in all likelyhood, and you can bet you'll be paying through the @ss for it for the next year or two at least after it does come out.

The one thing that might be worth waiting for is USB 3.0.

My current C2D machine will hold me over until then.
