Whenever I get a new electronic gadget like a cell phone or a laptop, I always let it run on battery at first until it's completely dead, and then I charge it for 12 hours. Is this the correct way of doing things? If so, what about a refurb mac? Is the battery used already?

I am not sure if the battery is used or not; I would guess that it is. There is no reason to do any of that stuff with modern technology. See the battery guide for more information.

I'm 100% you don't have to do this anymore. You're stuck in the past. With older model batteries (over 10 years, maybe a little more), you had to do that. But nowadays, you can charge safely at 95% or any percent for that matter.

that's funny, cuz i remember i bought something just last year and the manual said it had to be charged for more than 6 or 8 or 12 hours or whatever the number was just the first time. It might've been my cell phone (and it's a new model, not one from 1997!)

it most likely used old battery technology, then. a lot of companies use junk products for higher profit. it depends what you get, i suppose.

just to be safe, read the manual I guess. but for a macbook, obviously Apple uses high technology.
