Hello everyone!
I have a Toshiba P500-16F notebook (made for adriatic region), and I love it. I got it 2 years ago, by a pure luck and although I could get an extremely good desktop PC for 1/3 Toshiba's price back then, I don't want to change it since it has everything I need and more.
I've been using it mostly for gaming and working in AutoCAD and Catia. It has been running great, with some minor setbacks, but now it shows that newer games, and more demanding drawings and assemblies I do make it struggle.
It has Intel i5 430M 2.27 GHz, 4 GB RAM, and GeForce GT 330M. "Can you run it" application for games usually fails it for CPU, and bigger drawings and assemblies which I mentioned earlier cause a fair amount of lag.
I checked it with CPU-Z, says the socket is 989 rPGA, chipset is HM55, and my Windows Experience Index is as following:
Processor: 6.6
Memory: 5.9
Graphics: 6.4
Gaming graphics: 6.4
Primary hard disk: 5.3
Overall: 5.3
I'm not so good with PC hardware, let alone notebook hardware, so I would like if you could give me some advices on what is possible to do to make it perform better? More RAM? Better CPU, if that is possible? (and if it is, which should I get. Preferably, something that is available through e-bay, or any similar web-site. I don't think there are stores that sell notebook CPUs in Croatia)
Maybe a new gfx card if that is possible, I'm not even sure if any laptop's gfx can be changed?
I will gladly take any advice, and if further informations are needed, just write them down, and I'll try to find them.

Edit: I know that upgrading notebooks can be a pain, but I've read on Toshiba forums that if anyone can help with that, it's this community.

Don't trust Can You Run It. It's inaccurate for desktops at best and complete rubbish for laptops. If anything will hold you back in most games it's the GPU and that's not something you can change.
If you wanted to upgrade, you could bump the RAM to 8GB, it won't hurt and it's inexpensive. You could also install a SSD, won't help with games, but if your autocad and catia wrk require that you access teh HDD often, then you'll definitely like having a SSD.
Finally, the CPU is upgradeable to any first gen i5/i7, but quad core i7s will generate more heat so consider that. That said, it's likely you could upgrade to something like an i7-840qm.
If i were in your shoes, i'd consider a whole new notebook though. -

If you are looking to improve graphics performance, then obviously you need to upgrade the graphics card. That being said, it looks like the GPU on your laptop is soldered to the motherboard, so you are kind of out of luck there. I'd second tijo in buying a new machine with a better GPU.
You can change the CPU or RAM, but it won't help your CAD or gaming performance much, if at all.Last edited by a moderator: Jan 29, 2015 -
You could drop in a i5-560M Arrandale. As pointed out this would do nothing for your game but will help in video work. I find old upgrade prices a bit ridiculous unless you do some inside trading...

I got this link from a Toshiba forum Mobile Intel® HM55 Express Chipset and power rating for my notebook is 6.32A (not sure if the 'power rating' is the appropriate term here)
But if that won't do anything, there is no point in changing the CPU. What would 8 GB RAM actually do for me?
And about the new buy, it's most likely I would get a desktop in that case. High-end Toshibas like Qosmio or better Satellite or Satellite Pro cost often more than 10.000 HRK (more than 1600 USD), and you can get a really good desktop for around 450 - 700 USD. Toshiba is probably the most expensive notebook you can buy here, but I have only the best experiences with it, so I don't think I want to change that. So I could buy a desktop for gaming in a few months, and leave my P500 for work and entertainment.
Edit: I was just reading some other threads and people say that a better CPU and more RAM can improve performance for gaming. So which one is it? Gaming-wise, I can run every game I tried on the highest settings, but some of them lag. Max Payne 3 doesn't, FIFA 12 does. It's not a huge lag, but still. -
If the game is not GPU dependent, then a CPU upgrade could get you a few more FPS in games more CPU dendent. This is what everyone means by not really worth it, Most, not all , of the newer games want both, strong CPU/GPU. Your 4 Gig of ram is fine, an SSD only speeds up overall loads.
My X775 cost me $1K USD. I find that spending more leaves you with an expensive obsolete laptop, in one year, by the rate of technology improvements so agree with the desktop..far easier to upgade in steps no? The term "future proofing" is a joke, but yea, if wife won't have me killed then I look at the highend Clevos and such for the ease of the expensive upgrades

You should be able to easily upgrade to a i7-720QM CPU; saw them on ebay for around $60-$70.

I've been using laptops (only Toshibas, even with the price, I like them the most) for over 7 years now. I had only one desktop PC in my life so far, but in this case, it would be stupid for me to spend 15-20 hundred dollars just for gaming (the CAD problems are not so big, as I mentioned earlier), when I can get the same thing for half the price including all of the peripherals I need.
And also, P500 is a very useful entertainment system, so yeah... I don't think I'll get rid of it while it's still a good notebook. And I don't think I'll upgrade anything, I'll rather save that money and put it into a quality desktop.

This is exactly right. Also; when doing a cost/benefit analysis - if the price (of the notebook) is higher it does not mean that the decision changes.
Past purchases ($$$$) are not an input into a current analysis of a new platform (vs. upgrading the old one). Simply and totally irrelevant.
The only decision ($$-wise) is how much can the old system be sold for (if anything) to put towards the new system.
The most important decision is how much increase in performance will a new platform offer vs. the old/current system - AND - is this enough of a reason to buy now - given the $$$$.
(If you've upgraded the O/S, if you've upgraded/maxed the RAM and if you've upgraded the HDD/SSD - then the next true performance upgrade is a new/current platform).
What I would recommend to try to increase performance:
Clean Install Win7x64 (if you don't have it already).
Clean Install Win8 RP (if you want to test the new O/S... much faster performance from old hardware).
Unpark your cpu cores:

Install 8GB RAM.
Install an SSD (Crucial M4 or Intel 520 - 240GB or larger).
Throw your current HDD (after backing it up and making sure the new configuration works 100% stable, of course) into an external enclosure for your DATA needs.
With all the above steps taken in the Order Shown; your system will still be viable for many years to come and will greatly enhance the amount you will sell it for in the future. The games will still be limited by the gpu - but now; the rest of the system will help the gpu along as much as it can and while the maximum fps 'score' won't increase dramatically, the minimum fps 'score' should - and hopefully it will be enough to make your games and your workload much smoother.
Notes:
Win7x64 (not Starter Edition) if it is 'clean installed' with all updated drivers will give a noticeable performance boost vs. any bloatware filled manufacturers 'restore' disk.

Win8 RP will really make your 'old' hardware come to life - if you can run your games/programs/workflow on it (you'll only know by testing) - it is worthwhile to explore.
Increase your RAM to 8GB minimum (or 16GB, if the price is right...) to really let any current version of Windows x64 fly - it may even impact your video card's performance if it is using shared memory too...
A current 240/256GB SSD will make your system feel 'modern' again - its actual 'peak' performance won't/can't be increased - but it will certainly minimize all the disk activity your 5400 RPM drive has to do to simply open a window/program or data file by a large margin (not to mention faster boot/shutdown sequences). again; it can't/won't increase the performance your system has to offer (that is governed mostly (99.9%) by the cpu/ram combination...), but it will definitely take your notebook's responsiveness up a few notches.
By unparking your cpu's, you may see an additional increase in responsiveness; this will only be enhanced if an SSD is installed, but it feels like its on the same level as installing an SSD does to your system.

Sir, you have really hit on some luck! As a matter of fact, you CAN upgrade the graphics card. Yes everyone else is wrong, they are haters of complicated upgrades etc...
Your motherboard shares the same PCB layout as that of the Qosmio x500 and x505.
The graphics card is a removable gtx 460m 1.5gb gddr5 and will run you about 150$. Unfortunately, your gt 330m is soldered. So you DO need to buy the motherboard AND the graphics card in order to upgrade.
The motherboard will run you near 300$ on Ebay but only 230$ on Aliexpress.
You would also need new heatsinks and a new Sandy Bridge CPU. Unless you get the Arrandale x500 model, part number a000053140. x505 is A000052590.
So all in all, probably not worth it to do this upgrade YET.
There is a good chance it will be possible to do for under 300$ within the year. Keep an eye out on ebay for a used motherboard. You could even post a WTB thread here to see if someone by chance has a motherboard laying around.
Definitely if you still have your laptop in 2 years, there will be a motherboard going for under 200$, and the upgrade will be worth it. Then you can probably get 100$ back from selling your current motherboard.
Upgrades like this can be perfect if you keep the price in perspective. There is much value in keeping the notebook you have, using a notebook that you trust because you have completely disassembled it, not having to transfer all your files and get used to a new system, etc.

But considering this, there are quite a few factors involved. First, and I can't stress this fact enough - I live in Croatia. Our customs are still very bad. They should be better once we join European Union, but for now, the price of an article you buy in foreign countries can rise dramatically. For a 300$ product, you have to pay 25% taxes, you have to pay customs, and in some cases you have to pay for one more thing which I don't know how to say in English, but it's about the paperwork... so I could look at a 450-500$ for a 300$ product.
I'm positive that you can't buy even a CPU for a notebook in Croatia, let alone motherboards. And I don't know if I could find a store or a service where they could do everything you said, and I could be safe my notebook won't get ruined by the people who know little about that type of job. As you said - it's a complicated upgrade.
I will surely look for a way to do this, and I thank you very much for that info, but I think someone else could have more use of these informations. -

New motherboard, new cpu and new gpu - why? That is called a new platform where I come from (and I'd prefer warranty with that...).
What you're recommending may not even be viable in 2 years time and it will certainly be superseded by something much better than you or I can imagine right now.
I am not a hater of complicated upgrades: I simply haven't seen an upgrade that was worth the time and money and risk vs. simply buying a new system for a long, long time. And that was on the desktop side of the equation - in notebooks 'upgrades' are really 'side grades' if all aspects of the transaction are taken into consideration - and for that privilege you get to pay top $$$ to essentially stay where you were too.
Notebooks are made to be disposable items (when they don't perform to our satisfaction any longer) - use them that way for the best bang-for-the-buck. -
LOL, niffcreature! It's not the upgrade, It's the COST of the upgrade. I have two laptops that will need MB swaps or GPU re-balls down the road. I make bids, and have bids in the works for these and other upgrades, within reason. As more and more people do the upgrades I find the prices of some cpu's jump $60 within one auction, same seller.
So for me, myself and I, upgrades good.. if cheap. -
If the upgade cost are reasonable, no problem, people love getting longer life before adding to the landfil, no?
Example; My FX, 4 years old. Cost of upgrades; $500 for CPU/MB-GPU, media bar, memory. If I could do this for $250 then I would jump on it. Right now the USED, pulled, MB are getting hard to find and I do not wish to pay postage back to china if part ends up bad.

No need to add to a landfill - there are many places (and individuals) who would gladly take them as donations (and continue using them until they don't work anymore). -

Yeah, you should. You've got your money's worth out of your system (... 4 years in).
No matter what you think; you're always paying full price. And, when the price you're paying (to stay 'far' behind) includes your time (no price tag on that...) - you are simply paying more than you should imo.
Cost is not simply $$ - there are other, sometimes more important factors to consider too.

Hmm, well you might have to explain a little more how I've paid full price for several laptops that I got for free.
As for my suggestion, obviously it wasn't a suggestion for right now unless you could actually find everything at half price, so I don't know why you would even bring up that argument when I clearly stated "in a few years if you still have the laptop...".
And honestly I would think it would be fairly obvious that my entire post was not so much a suggestion at all as it was an exploration in the facts of notebook manufacturing and perhaps a retaliation and correction against those who are so quick to say, "it can't be upgraded, I know this for a fact" when they are completely wrong. Though I'm sure you'd rather have all of those people continue to be wrong and continue distributing incorrect information instead of myself posting the truth at all... because the ends justify the means to get them to buy a new notebook and be a happier consumer?

i5-640M v. I7-740QM , for example.
