Does anyone have an informed opinion what impact the 'next generation' of notebook chips dubbed Yonah will have on benchmarks such as with zPrime?
I am nearly on the verge of springing for a Asus M50Vm-A1 with the new Montevina chip and now learn about these new developments. It's not like I absolutely have to purchase another notebook right now. My old one is limping along despite the fact that the WiFi switch is broken and all of the USB ports no longer work.![]()
What little I know about the Yonah chip is that the two cores with share a 2MB cache. The claim is that this will significantly enhance performance. But by how much? And who will benefit most? Gamers?
I have also read that what will really speed things up further is the next generation of RAM. Some forecasters say that by or in 2009 more than half of all notebooks will be utilizing DDR3 SDRAM.
I lack the technical prowess to understand the implications with respect to all of this. I think that is why I became a member of this forum so that I could become more informed.
So, I am ready to be informed.![]()

Yonah...is two or three generations old.
-
Yonah was released last year, or the year before that. It's the Core Duo. It's old.
-
Yonah --> Merom --> Penryn--> Penryn QC
You should be talking about the Penryns now, or at least about the Meroms.. -
Might as well get what is out now, Montevina is brand new.

Comparing your Yonah against the latest Penyrn chips is like ballet dancer against a boxer.

are you living in a cave?

Its our job at NBR to keep people informed. Not bash them when they are uninformed (no offense to OP). -
Montevina is the code name for Centrino 2/Pro. The CPU codenames vary depending on the which CPU you're talking about. I think currently it's Yorkfield, or is it Wolfdale. Nehalem should be next.

Yonah = Core Duo early 2006 release (my 5672 had one) 65nm
Merom = Core 2 Duo Mid 2006 65nm
Peryn = Core 2 Duo early 2008 45nm

. But going from yonah to peryn was like going from a low end celeron(from p3 days) to a top pentium M (from p4 days). But yeah I totally agree, I wont be upgrading my dell until it breaks or something unexpected happens. Besides I still use my single core turion averatec on a daily basis just fine even after almost 4 years.

Well, I am just going to have to suck this one up...I had been sort of suspecting that information that I was gleaning from http://www.bizwaremagic.com/cheap_laptops.htm was a bit dated let alone the fact that it seems as if the main preoccupation is shilling for certain laptop mfgs. Boom! I just unsubscribed from that list.
Thanks.
