Yes it can, 2.5 inch drives are for notebooks. The BIOS should have no problem recognizing it, as far as I know.

I am aware that 2.5inch drives are made for notebooks however i do know that all Dell's drives are 9.5mm thick or less the drive thats in it as far as i can tell is 9.5mm high. Perhaps Dell in their infinite wisdom have made the drive bay only capable of housing a 9.5mm drive as 2.5inch drive with a thickness of 12.5mm is quite a rarity. So was just worried about movin to a drive thats considerably thicker than the old one haven't measured the hard drive on the laptop and can't see the spec anywhere for this info

I can't answer about the Dell being able to take a 12.5mm high drive.
An alternative would be to settle for a 250GB HDD. The Samsung HM250JI is currently available at Komplett.

Actually, I think all Dell (optical) drives are 12.5mm drives. 9.5mm drives are ultra-slim type, used for example in T61. So I don't know whether that asnwer your question or not since I have never use the optical drive bay for anything else other than optical drive. But I know for sure that the optical drive in my Dell is 12.5mm.
Given the extra enclosure that removable HDs use, I would assume you would have to get a 9.5mm HDD, though I might be very wrong.
