Anyone have any info on this drive? I am looking for a new one - 320 is big enough but now the 500mb's are pretty cheap. Was looking on Newegg and saw this (since the 7k500 is out of stock): HITACHI Travelstar H2IK5001672SP

Afaik it's a 7K500 in a retail box. Same drive, new Box.

Good & fast hard drive. If you want more performance: Seagate Momentus XT or WD5000BEKT ( $75).

Thanks Phil - I knew you would probably reply! High performance is not necessarily an issue. I mean, we all want speed, but I am looking for quiet and cooler operation - and more room. I have a Toshiba 160gb in the Vaio now and it is silent, but I could use a bump in speed. The Seagate that came with my laptop clicked too loud, I complained and Sony replaced it. In your opinion, which of the 3 above is the quietest? And I am not sure the XT is really worth the extra $50 to me - though I can get the 320 XT for $115.

If you're looking for silence the XT can be taken off your list.

    I haven't had my hands on a WD5000BEKT yet.

Hitachi 7K500 is generally very quiet for a 7200rpm drive. Unless you are an extreme silence freak you won't go wrong with it. The sound of a 7K500 is a very light breeze.

I just got a Studio XPS 16 as a replacement.. I can tell you one thing I notice a major difference with the 640gb 5400rpm drive in it speed wise than the Seagate Momentus 500gb 7200rpm drive that was in my old SXPS 16..

I HATED the Seagate however due to the noise, and power it sucked up. Not to mention that baby ran HOT.

I'm going to pick up that WD Black 500gb if it's anything like my WD AAKS drives in my desktop I'm going to be a happy happy man.

I have two XT's now and they both are as quiet as the 7K500 I have. The first one I had to RMA was a nightmare however so apparently YMMV with them.

A lot will depend on what notebook you're using. I've read many reports of Macbook Pro owners that say the Momentus XT is not quiet.

    The 7K500 get's better reports.

That could be true, the two have have been in laptops out in the open and in enclosures along with the 7K500. In all the enviorments so far I haven't noticed more noise. My 7200.4 was much noisier however.

As I stated the one I RMA'd vibrated alot and was very noisy, it even had a squeal to it at times. I think the problem with these is that they vary wildly by sample. In the end it is luck of the draw and YMMV. Doesn't speak very well for their QC though.

I just picked this drive up at Fry's for $64! Now the pain of a clean, start over reinstall. I am not going to mirror, this time.

Yes, I would love to see WD add NAND to their new 500GB 7200rpm Black.
