Well the 6850 is just a 5850 rebadged and clocked slightly higher.

Sandy bridge plus a 6950 would be interesting.

SB looks awsome, but I hate the Envy line...

My buddy has an Envy 17 and its been a huge problem. The CPU (i7-720QM) runs at 95C when he's websurfing... Is this normal? He's RMA'd it thrice, and nothing has changed... I recommended the usual stuff (undervolt GPU and repaste etc, but to no avail).

    That would work. :D

I can deal with the fact that the card is a rebrand if it runs cooler and only weighs 7.5 pounds. Beats my 5650 big time!

It should run cooler, along with sandybridge and HP's coolsense will help... Hopefully they did a redesign of the internal cooling architecture as well because the cooling on the current Envy17's is pretty bad :(

I've heard rumblings that the Envy 17 won't come out until the end of February and debut @ $1700 base price :( :(

Aren't all SB laptops going to be like this? I thought this was one of the features of SB

I think not. You need either Nvidia optimus, AMD's switchable graphics, or an add-on chip (Called something like lightspark.. I forget) -- it's not part of the intel chipset. I'm not 100%, but even on the intel webpage they have a list to tell you which manufacturers have it.

What intel did is offered integrated graphics on the processor -- so manufacturers dont have to cobble together all the components to pull it off, it becomes as simple as using an nvidia/amd solution.

I think it depends on if they are built to take advantage of the GPU. I know it looks like the Asus that is out doesn't.

i hope the cooling better otherwise even this envy would be nothing more than a overheating piece of junk like the old one.. I actually liked the envy 17 but i was so afraid of it overheating after my DV6, i went for asus.. i wouldn't think hp could make it run cooler..

Cooling depends on the cooling system, not the chips. That's a baseless claim, especially given that the current version already runs too hot and that HP said that they're going to improve the cooling system. Nothing can be said until it's been tested.

I almost bought an Envy I5 and loaded with Blu-Ray, HD screen, etc... but I could never get over the ugly design of the exterior. I missed out on the time they still had the polished casing. Hopefully they will have that option again this year but with Sandy

Talking about the actual heat output of the chip, not the cooling design. The 6850 is a direct rebadge, with a slight clock increase. You may be right about the cooling, we'll have to see.

I've got an Envy 15, and none of the temps even approach that. Just a hair over 70C maxed when I've overclocked the GPU for gaming.

He may be running into what I had... my GPU heatsink wasn't making even contact with the chip initially so it wasn't piping heat away. Is the pattern of the paste when he repastes it evenly "smooshed"? Is it squished to a very thin, almost invisible layer? If neither of those are true, then his heatsink isn't making good contact with the chip and that is likely the cause of the problems.
