So we should expect the new Penryn notebooks to be announced and some put on sale January 6th or a bit later just like how when Santa Rosa launched, new notebooks were announced and released then?

Usually the big companies pick them up a few weeks or a month later in a refresh of their computers.

I just want to see the new series of Thinkpad. It would be awesome and if they do the same thing they did with the Santa Rose platform.

I was planning to buy a 8510p soon, but would waiting be better? Would the 8510p get upgraded to the new processors soon after release?

Waiting would be better as the price of the old technology will go down.

How much of a difference in gaming performance will there be with these new processors with the HD 2600 GDDR3? The 8510p that I was going to order comes with a T7300.

It would take another month or two after release for Penryn based processor to be seen on mass production notebooks.

    Penryns are total awesomeness.

It'll actually make Santa Rosa laptops worth buying over Napa ones.

and I'm stuck with my crappy old 65nm Santa Rosa :( At least Intel is still calling Penryns Core 2 Duos, which saves the resale value of our current Core 2 laptops. I can't wait for Nehalem to come out.

The replacement for the T7300 (2.00 GHz, 4 MB L2, $209) is the T8100 (2.10 GHz, 3 MB L2, $209). So you're getting 100 MHz at the cost of 25% of the cache. The increase would be 5% without the L2 cache drop, with it, I'm not sure you'll even see an increase. Penryn does introduce a few new things, so you probably will see some, but not very much.

Worth waiting for? Definitely not, IMO. Go with the 8510p with the T7300.

Uhh shouldn't the "replacement" for the T7300 be the T8300? Even if it costs more? Remember that current generation 65nm Core 2s have dropped significantly in price since it came out. You have to compare the release prices.

Penryns will run cooler at higher clock speeds, while maintaining a higher L2 cache. (3-6 mb??) You'll see up to a 25% increase in performance at the same temperature, which is pretty huge.

Are the penryns in fact compatible with the santa rosa dv9500t's? I asked this on another thread, and they seemed to be unsure because it may require a bios update from hp. Any news?

The answer is the same until Penryn comes out. Maybe, because it may require a BIOS update.

The socket and FSB will be the same, so I don't see why not.

In fact intel designed the "Santa Rosa" specifications to include the first generation of Penryns.

The T7300 was replaced by the T7250, which is being replaced by the T8100.

Performance difference will be there, but I really wonder how many people are actually utilizing their CPU? I doubt it'd make a difference when it comes to gaming as that is more a function of the video card. I have a T7500 and honestly could have gone with one of those T2xxx (think they are 1.6ghz) and probably not noticed much of a difference. There are some programs/games/parity that I use that will make use of my processor, but for the majority of the time it is just a bit overkill.

One thing that will be interesting is how much battery life will be saved with the new processors? The D630 already gets 6 with X3100 and 4:30 with the 135m graphics card. Through one of those cpu's in and I wonder if they could squeeze out another hour (doubtful though).
