    My first post...

Since the announcement of newest Seagate Momentus 7200.3 Hard drives as reported by Chaz here:
    HTML:
    http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=4420
, a number of Maxtor Onetouch 4 Mini external drives came out as well in the range of 80gb up to 320gb. As we all know maxtor Onetouch Minis uses Seagate drives inside.

As Seagate has announced, all Momentus 7200.3 hard drives, ranging from the 80gb capacity up to 320gb capacity, will have 16 mb cache buffer. Though availability will be for the Dell XPS line initially, the Seagate owned Maxtor has released a refresh of the Ontetouch 4 Minis with possibly the 7200.3 inside as mentioned above.

I then checked out newegg if the new maxtor onetouch 4 mini 320gb is listed already and surely it was though on the specifications it is only listed at 5400rpm. Newegg has had some errors in the specs before so i investigated even further coz i've been looking to get a 7200 rpm drive for my Dell XPS M1530. Since this is the first time Seagate came out with 320gb and 7200rpm in the 2.5" size and barring any further announcements of a 5400rpm variant im assuming that they have used the momentus 7200.3 inside these Maxtor external drives.

    Went to this site
    HTML:
    http://www.maxstore.com/searchresults.asp?search_id=14&dept_id=68
and found out that the drives with the same part numbers listed at newegg are indeed the 7200rpm with 16mb cache size. It just gets better coz all from 80gb to 320gb are listed as having the 7200rpm.

This has gotten me so excited coz some brick and mortar stores are offering discounted price of the 320gb external drive. Now if someone can can please point me where i can find instructions on how i can take apart the enclosure without breaking and i'll be set to get one of these in a hurry... :D

    Sorry for the long post.

I'm excited to get one. For the price listed it's a bargain. I don't mind voiding the warranty by opening up the enclosure just as long as it is the Seagate Momentus 7200.3 inside.

If anyone knows how to open the Maxtor Onetouch 4 mini or any links for that matter please post it. thanks.

Wow it was easy to open but guess what. Its a 5400.4 320 gig. Oh well. Just use a butter knife and slide it up the side and it will pop right off.

I didn't know that they made 320 gig 5400 rpm drives. Oh well I upgraded anyways and its fast 68 Mb/s average transfer.

Bummer! I am about to head out to Office Depot and found Jamaicanyouth's post.

Thanks for the added info sgogeta4. I searched and didn't find that contrasting maxtor site. I didn't even realize that there are two maxtor sites that has two variants of the same part number. could it be that one of it is wrong? or could it be that this is the same case as the external hitachi drives having the same sku# but one has the 5400rpm and the other 7200rpm? If that's the case then i'll try to get one and if i get lucky and get the 7200rpm one I'll let you all know and then maybe we can compare serial numbers.

It's possible that they are phasing out the older 5400 external drives in favour of 7200 ones. I believe Hitachi did that in a few of their external drives. The box said 5400 RPM but they changed the drive to their 7200 RPM variant.

Ok so I bought one at office depot and opened up the drive to find a 320gb Seagate Momentus 5400.5 Model no. ST9320320AS. Searched for it but didnt find much info about it. All i know is that the .5 in 5400.5 means it is a 5th generation of the Momentus series.

I'm thinking of using this one to upgrade my 160gb Fujitsu used in my Dell XPS M1530 or maybe return it and get the newest Seagate 320gb 7200 rpm drive or keep it and get either the Seagate or the 320gb Western Digital.

I didn't really feel so bad about it since the Lakers won by a rout. lol

My computer doesn't support sata. Is easy to disassemble? The hard-disk is like this one in the picture? http://www.kamae.it/ebay/hard_disk/per_notebook/samsung120.jpg

Its best that you just buy one from Newegg link that I posted. External drives are SATA nowadays.

Yup I had doubts myself when you mentioned that you got a 5400.4 drive coz i don't see any sense for Seagate to produce a new drive on an older generation other than they already had produced it earlier but due to some unfortunate circumstance they held release of it.
