I have a HP pavilion dv9000 notebook with two 512 ram sticks. How do I know what kind of RAM I need to buy to upgrade to 2 gigs. I read all kinds of forum posts and websites that say different things. I want to get a good deal at Newegg but I just can't tell what kind of RAM my computer needs. Any ideas of where I can look on my computer to find that information and then what the important numbers and letters I need to buy 2 x 1 gig sticks of ram that will work?

BTW this computer is brand new and I used this website and several of you kind folks helped me with my decision to buy this computer. I thank you.

Lots of ways to find. I would download CPU-Z see what it says you have. Also you can go to crucial.com and they can scan your computer. In order to save you time, the only number that matters is the 1st! I mean the 5400 & 5300 are the same so don't stress!

    It will be 200-pin DDR2-667 SODIMMs. They're sometimes just called "DDR2 667MHz".

You can also get 533MHz to save a few bucks, but the 667 runs at the same speed as the frontside bus, making it a touch faster.

So, this is what I found with CPU-Z.

    Slot#1 DDR2
    Module size:512
    Max Bandwidth: PC2-5300 (333 MHz)

    Slot#2 is the same

So for the 2gb upgrade I'm assuming the 333MHz will be changed to the 667MHz you mentioned thegsrguy? Is 5600 better than 5300? Thanks for the help.

While I'm here... anyone recommend a brand of memory? I'm looking for a good quality, yet budget solution. Thanks again, you guys rock.

The MHz will not change, 333 is not Dual channed, 667 is.
    I don't think that there is PC2-5600.
I would recommend the brand names like Kingston, Corsair, Nanya, Crucial.
Also check the Hot Ram Deals.
