I bought a 128 gb ssd supertalent from newegg and I just ran some benchmarks on it. There is no OS on it at the moment. I'll install the OS later tonight.

why is your CPU usage at 50% ? And do you see any stops from time to time while using the drive ?

I put the drive in the ultra bay II adapter of my Thinkpad T400 and it wasn't formatted, that could have been the reason it was at 50 percent.

I installed Windows XP SP3 on it, used Nlite and it took 15 minutes to install. I copied my steam folder from my other disk and there was no system slow down.

Real quick: what is Nlite? And what games on Steam are you using predominantly? I play CS/DOD Source everyday, and wonder if an SSD would make it any better? I play Steam apps on a 7200 RPM 120 GB Seagate Momentus currently...don't want to bug ya', just when ya' get around to playing :)

NLite is an image tool for XP which allows you to customize what Windows components get installed as well as help build a boot/install disc that slipstreams in service packs and device drivers. There is also a corresponding tool for Vista called VLite.

The games from steam are Half life 2 and the episodes, Bioshock, and Prey. I was playing Half Life 2 Episodes 2 and the drive didn't suffer from any stuttering.

That would make sense because playing a game is not a typical stutter situations.

If you want to test if your drive stutters look at the heavy multitasking situations described here for the OCZ Core:

How is your power consumption/battery life what affect if any has the SSD had on these things for you?

I haven't tested the battery life yet. I did copy 11 GB worth of data to the drive and I didn't notice any system freezes.

I don't know if you read the link I posted but you won't notice freezes in a situation like that. A way to notice freezes is to have multiple processes writing to the SSD.

If you'd copy 11GB and do other tasks in the mean time, then you would know.
"To test the drive's ability to multitask, we also conduct the Transfer Test a second time while running a virus scan with AVG Free 8 and getting a full-screen capture with CamStudio in the background."

I'd be interested to know if this drive suffers from this problem, like the OCZ Core.

OK I'll encode some video, while running spybot search and destroy to see if the system freezes.

I copied 12 GB's of data, compressed a 2 gb file folder using winrar, ran spy bot search and destroy and encoded one video, with 27 tabs open in firefox didn't notice any system freezes.

Were you doing all these activities on the same drive? Because I see you have two SSDs.

It sounds great. I wonder if it has any downsides. Is your drive this one?: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820609333. Maybe it would be good to share your experience in a Newegg review so other people know about this.

If anyone finds some professional reviews, please share.

    PP:

The numbers coming up in the benchmarks are in the 35-60 range depending on who is doing the tests, the hardware they're running on and the benchmarks they're running.

How would you test this unit for the stuttering reporting in other units that use the J Micron?

guys, the jmicron controller I don't think is as bad as people make it out to be. One particular drive manufacturer gave it a worse name than it really has. I owned the older supertalent 120gb drive and had no problems with it other than a few jumps in streaming video playback, other than that it was a solid drive. I almost expect nothing less and was going to buy a new suptertalent drive but bit the bullet and went with the obviously superier tech in the intel for the extra 200 and definatley glad i did. However it would be nice to know if the new supertalent ran even better for others wanting a ssd at my company for a better price.

p.s. you want to test real world random write performance of a drive, install adobe 9 reader(uninstall if you have it already). Time it fromt he point you hit the install button (not the next buttons) till it says finish. Intel ssd does it in 19seconds on my pc, spindle drive took 1min 55sec, ocz drive took 6min 44seconds..... i'll test it on my old supertalent 120 drive to see what it does. You should try it on your ox drive and see what it turns in.

I had jmicron on my former desktop, it freezed once in a while when using those SATA-connections (i've read about other who had the same problem connecting via jmicron on motherboards who has it), so it's not only related to the chips on ATX-motherboards using them? SSD's with jmicron have the same problem too? Can't be a coincidence!

    EDIT: clarifying.

    1. grab iometer
    2. this iometer config (may need to sign up to view)
    3. extract the config file (whereever) and then open it (iometer will open)
    4. expand your PC treeview thing on the left and click worker 1
    5. in disk targets, select OCZ core drive letter
    6. click results display tab and move update frequency to say 10s (so you can watch it go)
    7. click the green go button. it allocates like 10GB file on the drive, and then will randomly write to different portions of it.
