Hello guys.
At the beginning i would like to say sorry because i dont know if its a good place to make thread like this. But anyways ive got problem with my new Clevo W230SS. When i mounted CPU (i7-4700MQ), RAM (2x 4GB Crucial Ballistix Sport 1866MHz 1.35V) and HDD 1TB 7200RPM HGST SATAIII my laptop is not booting.
When i push Power ON there is 2-3 secs long beep (i mean sound lol) and nothing else... just black screen. i tried to run it with 1 RAM , another one, then without RAM (no beeping), then with RAM and HDD (BEEP) and without HDD (no beeping). I went to local service where i tried to install just normal DDR3 1.5V 1600MHz but still it was beeping.
Few hours later when i was about to package it back to send it to service i tried to power it on again (with everything on board) and there was no beeping, but screen is black. I noticed that from the beginning CPU fan is not working. Maybe it's CPU problem ? Anyone had problem like that ?
Edit: Oh well...I can see that i could post this in the Sager/Clevo section. Sorry guys

Sounds like the cpu is fried, could be the motherboard too.
Were you switching components while the power and/or the battery were attached? -
When i was in this local service guy told me same thing, that it could be CPU or motherboard. Of course i was doing it without battery and power supply attached.

Okay, had to check though...
Were the parts purchased new from Clevo (or a Clevo reseller)?
See if they can offer any help.
How old is this system, you say new - but are you upgrading it or just putting it together for the first time now? -
I bought just laptop (from Clevo reseller, 2 years of guarantee) without CPU, RAM AND HDD (i bought them in other places). Im putting it together for the first time. CPU is used one, but seller told me that its working, RAM and HDD is new.

I guess you should contact the cpu seller first and if a replacement does the same thing; it may be the MB at fault.
Good luck. -
The funny thing is, that's the exact same behavior my machine had. I also thought it arrived fried. (I also bought the CPU, RAM and storage separately, heh).
Beeps but nothing else, then I took it apart and reassembled it and it would just stay blackscreen for 3 seconds on powerup and then shut down again, then I did the whole thing again and held the power button and it still didn't work.
Then I removed the battery, did a power drain, stuck the power cord in (but not the battery) and tried to boot and it worked.
I assume when you put in the CPU, you made sure the CPU mount screw was tightened properly?
Anyway, try to boot it without batter first. If that doesn't work try the following.
Do a powerdrain (hold button 20seconds without battery), take the machine apart, make absolutely sure the CPU is seated properly and the clamping screw is screwed all the way (don't try to overtighten, just make sure it made the rotation properly), put it back together and try to boot again without battery. -
So at first i tried to boot it without battery and nothing happened. Then I did as you tell me. I took off radiator, took CPU and put it again, and i was trying to screw it in different positions:
- If it was too little and i pushed Power ON there was 3 secs long BEEP and shut down.
- When it was in the middle or little bit less when i push Power ON there is quiet beep for 3 secs and laptop was working for 10 secs, after this 10 secs CPU fan turned on with full power also for 10 secs and laptop shut down, when i tried again CPU fan was working only for 3 seconds. When i mount radiator and cover and push Power ON it beeps for 3 seconds. HDD is working, there is blackscreen and nothing else.
-If its screwed on max there is same thing as above - 3 seconds beep, HDD is working, blackscreen and nothing else. -
Power off completely. Remove battery, remove power cord, remove the CMOS battery for 60 seconds. Replace the CMOS battery, plug in, and turn on. It may just need a CMOS reset entirely. System *NEEDS* RAM to even start up and use BIOS, etc. So if it still doesn't start up, try to use one stick of RAM, and switch slots if it still doesn't boot up, and then use the other stick in both slots.
Worse case, is remove the CPU, boot up with RAM installed and see if you can get into BIOS then. Then you know it's the CPU. -
I'm reasonably certain that one can't access BIOS without the CPU installed.
-
I tried to use one stick of RAM and i switched slots etc, still nothing.
And finally i removed CPU....Power ON button is shining only for 1 second, and after 3-4 secs keyboard flashlight is turning off. While CPU was removed i tried to boot it with one RAM stick and i changed slots, but still same thing happened. So probably it means that there is something wrong with laptop ? Or it just cant boot to BIOS without CPU ? -
Nope you're right. Can't boot without CPU. Don't know what I was thinking. Sorry for misinformation. I need my morning coffee I think. I swear I had some instance where you didn't need the CPU. Might have been a desktop board with dual BIOS or something with blind flash. I don't know. I've upgraded so many desktops and laptops I've seen it all...
In any case something is FUBAR. I would see if you can get an alternate CPU and try it out. -
And there is very big problem, because i dont know anyone who could provide me similar CPU to test.
