    Hi,

I have cheap HP compaq CQ56-110EO laptop with AMD v140 processor.
Is it possible to upgrade it to AMD Turion p520? I'm asking because I would get one only 30€ euros and that would cheap upgrade if works. What about p320-p360?

Theoretically being the latest AMD mobile socket (S1G4) it should work. I'm upgrading my brother's Inspiron M5030 which has the same processor to a Phenom II N620, and I'll let you know the results.

HP's BIOS are generally more restrictive than Dell (they whitelist WLAN cards or you need to hack your BIOS to use non HP branded WLAN cards).

    According this maintence guide:

    http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c02657369.pdf

There are cq56 -laptops with p360 processor.
Only difference to p520 is smaller L2 cahce.
Bios is same F.17 in all CQ56-laptops.

I already ordered the p520 processor. I will post how it goes when I get it.

    Hi,

Do you know what kind of temperature you upgraded CPU runs at?
I upgraded mine from V140 to P340 and the lowest operating temperature is about 45 and highest is 68. I did not encounter any problems but want to make sure I did the thermal right. Thanks

Though my Dell has a different cooling system than your HP, it isn't great. Upgrading from a V160 to the N620 (20 watt CPU to 35 watt CPU), the max temperatures with MX-2 is like 72C, average hovers around 50-60C with 24C ambient room temperature.

Thanks for the feedback. I think it's probably okay then.
I might have put too much thermal paste. But if I did better it could have been about 40-50 instead of 45-55. From what I've heard, HP budget laptops tend to be worse than average on cooling. Still, the only time I've seen it reach 68(max) was when running Dragon Age 2 demo for more than 1 hour. It never goes that high with regular workload like Web, Office, streaming videos...,etc. The buggy Skype 5.0 only pushed it to 65 after an hour and the temperature dropped very quickly to 50s after ending the call.
