The hard drive on my daughter's 7020D failed so I need to buy another one. should I get a Fujitsu hard drive (from Newegg) or Seagate or Western Digital? Any other suggestions?
Thanks!

Western Digital makes very good laptop HDDs at nigh unbeatable prices.
-
I think Seagate is more reliable than any other.

Also, the original HD was 60 GB and my daughter has used 40 GB. I believe the original was 5400 RPM (I am not very knowledgeable about these technical aspects). Should I get a bigger and/or faster HD? The laptop was always very hot even with a new fan and I read that some of the faster hard drives were hotter compared to the slower ones. (She basically uses the internet, plays music, writes documents - no games) The notebook has been pretty noisy, although I don't know it that has anything to do with the hard drive. she would prefer it to be quieter. Any more suggestions for me?
Thanks! -
According to the tech specs on the Fujitsu website your daughters laptop takes a S-ATA drive. Given the age of this computer i thought that it might need an IDE hard drive but it does not. The model number of this laptop i believe is Fujitsu lifebook S7020D.
It should not really matter where you buy your drive you can mount the shock protection after you install your drive.
This is the tech spec page.

I am going to move this thread for you to the hardware forum. -
Thanks- I tried putting in the model on the fujitsu page you noted, but came up with zero results. I don't have the computer with me so don't have the serial number. How did you get the specs for the S7020D?

Just tried again and it worked!

I like Fujitsu drives i have one in my current laptop i find them to be nice and quiet. The Western digital drive i had last in another laptop I was not impressed at all as I found it a little to noisy for my liking.
Segate make good drives but the last one made clicky noises that i owned.
Also, you might want to think about going for a larger hard drive. I have seen some ebay sellers list your model as supporting at least up to a 160GB HD. -
I can recommend the Hitachi 5K320, nice mixture of good battery life, quiet, and fast.
Newegg is usually not the cheapest though. -
Thanks for the suggestion. She doesn't care as much about speed. She likes quiet, cool, good battery life.

Ok 5K320 it is then: http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=hitachi+5k320&oe=utf-8&cid=15543083320572904260#ps-sellers

Thanks again! However, fujitsu says I can have up to 80GB hard drive. My daughter has used only 40 of the 60 GB hard drive that failed. (She has had the machine over 3 years). So I am thinking of an 80 GB but am wondering about 5400 rpm vs 7200 rpm.

This site sells 250GB drives for 7020D

It would be prudent to check the model number of the existing HDD or look at the connector, just to be sure of the interface (lots of pins = parallel ATA / IDE, a plate with contacts each side is SATA).
You could get an 80 or 160GB version of the 5k320. These use one platter with one or two heads and give very good performance with low power consumption. The same applies to the 7k320 if you want a little more speed (and power consumption). However, the difference between that old HDD and any new one will swamp the incremental difference between 5400 and 7200 rpm.

I know the Fujitsu lifebook S7020D has an SATA hard drive (although I don't know what that means). My nephew who works with university computers is installing the hard drive. I am just trying to decide what to buy while he is away and get it to him this week so it can be installed when he gets back next weekend.

I think that you should go for at least a 160GB HD. You will probably find that these bigger drives might be cheaper as well then the smaller drives now.
Btw, good luck with the upgrade i would be interested in finding out how it went. -
Thanks for everyone's suggestions. I purchased an 80 GB 5400 RPM Western digital hard drive from New Egg- I had to get it quickly and later thought I should have gotten the 160 GB but it was too late to change at that point. It is now installed and everything seems to be fine.
thanks again-
