Try using disk management instead of partition magic. My entire hard drive had to be reformatted when I used partition magic. I will never use that software again.

YEs or just let xp or vista format you disk when you install you os

no need to use 3party disk formating utils

i use disk management with slow format (never quick) so that error checking takes place. works great! Initialize>create 1 partition only >1 logical drive for the whole available space of the HD (in XP)

you will need to install the proper SATA drivers from a bootable USB floppy drive if you are installing XP. You can also slipstream the SATA drivers on the XP cd with nlite.
If you are using Vista, than please disregard, because Sata drivers are already integrated into the Vista operating system.

have you created a bootable ms-dos floppy with the correct drivers installed?

You also need a bootable usb floppy drive.
    Not all will work.
For external usb drives, the only bootable ones are Teac or Mitsumi based floppy drives.
The other floppy manufacturers are not supported by Windows, and thus are not bootable.
