I just bought a new Seagate 7200 80GB hd for my nc8430, and when I try to install windows on it from a boot CD it says it can't find any hard drives. I went into the BIOS, but I can't find any place where it lets me specify hd. Any advice?

You may need serial ATA drivers for windows. If it's not a SATA drive, then I'm not sure. Make sure it's hooked up properly.

Its a SATA drive and its hooked up properly. I'm trying to install windows on it using an original WinXP Pro CD (no SP1 or 2). Can it be that back then windows couldnt recognize SATA?

Yeah, that's about the 85% most likely cause.

Seagate says their hard drives do not require Windows drivers to work, but maybe you'll need some in this case. See what you can dig up. Did the drive come with any software? They usually don't so you'd have to google for it. You'll have to put them either onto CD or external floppy if you have one. I did it yesterday for a client, but that was with a new gateway installing XP Pro.

I had some trouble installing the new DVD burner when I first got it, it was refusing to become slave, and was taking over the master HD and making it invisible!
If you remove your optical drive and notice that the problem was solved, then consider flushing it with a new frimware.
It could be simple a matter of slave/master!

    Good luck

I'm fairly certain that the original XP does not include the SATA driver. I would suggest that you use nLite http://www.nliteos.com/ to patch your XP version 0 to SP2 and also add later Microsoft patches and the HP drivers. There is a much better chance of a painless installation.
