So I decided to buy Samsung Spinpoint F1 1TB as a component of my DIY external HDD (along with Vantec NexStar 3i), and I am ready to buy it at all on Newegg, but what keeps me from buying is the Extended Warranty plan. Samsung already offers 3 years warranty, while the Vantec offers 1 year. Will adding 2 year Extended Warranty service to both from Newegg do any good for me, or is it just another scam to rip me off?

What does Newegg's Extended Warranty offer anyway? Why do they offer a different warranty service even if the products' manufacturers already provide them?

I always viewed the warranties from any store as a bit of a rip off. If you are purchasing with a credit card your credit card company should have some sort of extended warranty (for example amex will give you one year PAST the time that the manufacturers warranty ends). At that point you are looking at four years for the HDD which is pretty good in my book.

Do you really need extra warranty on the enclosure for ex? 3year for the HDD is enough imho, the most important part is the HDD.

Why is your choice just that external enclosure?
It seems pricey... as they all do the same thing.
And there is much cheaper enclosures to get (from $14), and if you do, warranty will not be an issue for the external enclosure really as they are so cheap to buy, you could just get a new one and still have money saved instead of buying that pricey one.

How much will a 1TB hard drive cost 3 years from now... 50 bucks? maybe? how much is the warranty? I think the math does itself but I don't know what newegg charges for an extended warranty. I don't buy them on electronics, well, except if I buy open box or a refurb (got a radio repaired out of normal warranty with one and a just bought open box speaker replaced with one)

That's a very good point... Also, how much is your time worth? It's not as if you can just drive the drive back to the manufacturer and get a new drive the same day. Between you sending it in, them sending a new one back, not to mention them looking at the silly thing you are looking at one week MINIMUM.

Wow, thanks for your advices everyone. I decided to go ahead and purchase the products without any extended warranties. Hooray for saving money! :)
