Intel and AMD I think just put out new chipsets and such, when will the next refresh/generation be? My laptop just broke on me due to a faulty video card, and the warranty is over, so should I wait or?

I'm guessing that you may have to wait around 6 months to a year for the next refresh. I don't know when exactly the next generation of stuff is coming out though. If I were you I would maybe get a laptop now since the new stuff has only been out for a little bit, and you will have less regret when the next generation comes out and you bought a notebook 3 months before the refresh.

All speculation they may do a Montevina refresh which could include 1333Mhz FSB (wild guess no documentation). That would be a refresh. When? I don't have a clue and it may not even happen or be possible?
New chipset? Intel is trying to stay on a one year cycle so expect the chipset for/and the Calpella platform Q3 2009, the chipset does not have a name I know of?
Waiting at this point seems silly as the introduction of Montevina is about 1 month old. The full integration has not even happened. And bugs and glitches are still being resolved. Why one would wait for the next is beyond me.
I would say now or a month or two (more models) is a very good time to buy. It is still the front end of the cycle. -
There could be a Montevina Refresh, as it I read on one of the sites (linked by Atbnet), that the new QC CPUs will be Socket P ' ?!
-
what are you talking about ANDY?? quad core socketPs?? i can't wait!!

Jayayess1190 Waiting on Intel Cannonlake
Montevina refresh is coming in Q1 2009. On Wikipedia, they show new Centrino 2 processors (P8700 and T9800).
After that is Calpella platform in fall 2009. The Auburndale (cpu+intergrated graphics) got pushed back until early 2010, but cpu's without intergrated graphics should still be out next fall.
For AMD, the Shrike platform should be out in the second half of 2009. It will be a cpu and gpu on two chips, then be intergrated into one chip in 2010 with the Eagle platform. -
The next Centrino platform, codenamed Calpella, is currently estimated for release in Q3 2009.
The next AMD notebook platform, codenamed Shrike, is currently estimated for release in 2009. -
Why wait. If you need a replacement you should buy now. It doesn't make sense to wait since every day there is something new.

Well it's just that I want something with integrated graphics with the ability to play video games that are yet to come out, namely SC2. I had the 8400M GS, and I heard the new ATI 3200/Intel X4500 are close to performance or even slightly better, but I can wait since I have a "family" desktop. Is the next AMD refresh you folks mentioned part of the "Fusion" project? Also, I would rather have newer hardware to go along with Win7.
-
Yes it is the fusion. The Puma crushes the X4500! The Puma 3200 crushes the 8400m GS.
-
Santa Rosa to Montevina proved to provide only minimal performance boosts. The question is, is the next jump of platforms going to be minimal or not. For example, Intels eventual platform which will phase out the Northbridge - Southbridge set up
-
Hence I want to wait.
-
I don't completely agree but I guess I also don't completely disagree either. One thing people need to keep in mind is no platform is going to come out that is going to blow peoples mind's with word or other office applications. What am I talking about? Last years systems are more than capable of running all current applications. Very few use applications that stress systems so even with truly more powerful computers users unlikely to notice. Keep that in mind.
To each his own. Be warned it is a lonely game that never ends. There is always something better just around the corner.
-
Powerpack is right. If you wait for Calpella or the next AMD platform, you may read something by then about the NEXT releases, and then wait more... so on and so on.
If you need a notebook, get one now. -
Software is not developing as fast as hardware (excluding games), we are still using softwares that runs on Pentium IIIs, but are running them on quad cores.
-
I don't need one, but would like one, that's my status right about now
. I've been looking forward to Fusion since it was announced too.
-
Want qualifies as need in my book. Why not buy a decent one now. Then when the Fusion and Calpella come out you can 1) let bugs get worked out, 2) let price get where you want.
I understand what you are thinking but you are doing without? Almost a year is a long time. I must ask do you game? What do you do? I ask because what has been mentioned so far shows over 99% of users do not even need what is out now? -
Yeah I do game, no Crysis or anything, probably the most demanding is Cod4, but I play mostly RTS. I had the 8400 and I guess it was one of the defective ones, warranty is over so yeah I got screwed over. Also, I would like something that will be able to run Win 7 when it comes out. I am still a student. and I will for most of this out of my pocket, so I'd like to make the best purchase possible.

montevina is the last intel platform with fsb. So there wont be any 1333mhz fsb notebook cpu.
Calpella will use DMI which is a point to point interconnect with memory. Currently Clarksfield(No integrated GPU and quad core in single die) will release during holiday 2009 on calpella platform. Auburndale with build in GPU will release on Jan 2010. Auburndale will have dual core CPU.
In Montevina we will see T9800(2.93ghz and 35W dual Core) and P8700 (2.53ghz 3MB L2 and 25W). I think they may release P9700(2.66ghz at 25W and 6MB L2).
I think current intel platform is really fast. We need AMD to match Intel performance for next major boost.
Next Hardware Refresh?
