How much does a graphics card performance/memory impact Video Editing and/or Photo Editing software?

Say I'm just doing stuff with GIMP, do I need a really nice graphics card, or would the Intel GMA work just fine for doing that kind of thing?

You would want more, you get the same results in the end just with a faster GPU you will be done quicker. And the CPU would help with the video editing.

What programs are you thinking about using.

Currently I use Vegas for Video editing, and use GIMP for photos, while I'd love to move on to Linux totally because almost everything else I use is really Linux/Open Source based, and works well on Linux, just Vegas that keeps me in Windows.

Future versions of Photoshop (such as CS4) will make use of GPU acceleration, and they will make a huge difference in some cases:

Note that in GIMP, however, GPU acceleration is not currently in use but it is on the development roadmap. You can Google more information for specific programs and their GPU acceleration capabilities.

GIMP and Vegas will *NOT* use the GPU at all, other than to show the program on the monitor. If you ONLY use those 2 programs, then the Intel GMA will be fine.

    BUT

As Bog said, future/current Adobe products such as Photoshop and After Effects will use the GPU, and it would be beneficial to have at least a low end Nvidia dedicated GPU.
