If you were impressed when Samsung last month announced it managed to cram 30 terabytes into a 2.5-inch SSD, prepare to have your mind blown right now.

A company called Nimbus Data just unveiled what it's calling the "world's largest solid state drive" – the ExaDrive DC100, which offers 100TB of storage in a standard 3.5-inch, hard drive-sized form factor. To put this in perspective, the ExaDrive DC100 offers enough storage capacity for "20 million songs, 20,000 HD movies, or 2,000 iPhones worth of data in a device small enough to fit in your back pocket," Nimbus Data wrote in a news release.


On top of that, the ExaDrive DC100 promises to be super energy efficient, using just 0.1 watts per terabyte, or 85 percent less power than its closest competitor.

"As flash memory prices decline, capacity, energy efficiency, and density will become the critical drivers of cost reduction and competitive advantage," Nimbus Data CEO and Founder Thomas Isakovich said in a statement. "The ExaDrive DC100 meets these challenges for both data center and edge applications, offering unmatched capacity in an ultra-low power design."

The 100TB ExaDrive DC100 is slated to launch this summer, and will come with a 5-year "unlimited endurance guarantee." There's no word as to exactly how much this drive will set you back, but don't expect it to come cheap; Nimbus Data said "pricing will be similar to existing enterprise SSDs on a per terabyte basis."

The company also plans to sell a 50TB model.

 

Now I can have two AAA games and all their updates installed on the same drive. Well done, Nimbus.

 

Yay for the storage density, but that marketing is facepalm

Who carries a disconnected 3.5" in their back pocket even once in their entire life? Let alone a $X,000 enterprise class drive? Who can even fit one in their back pocket? Nor would the market for this be interested in downloading an iPhone 2000 times (well, maybe the NSA). Maybe X hours of raw 4K footage would be more relevant? Certainly more relevant than how many 50Gb Bluray rips you can fit, since compression is a thing.
