On the Sony website, it says you can choose between 8GB and 12GB.. why is that?

I believe that's because the S15 has 4 GB of RAM soldered on the motherboard and only one slot for user upgrades.

This is because both the S13 and S15 have 4gb soldered to the motherboard and only one slot to add another module. In this case Sony offers a 4 or 8 gb module to add making the total RAM of the system either 8 or 12 gb (12 being the max because of the 4gb soldered on the motherboard).

Why did Sony solder 4GB of RAM onto the motherboard? I thought only Apple did that.. so they could make more money.

Usually having one or both modules soldered on the board helps make the laptop thinner and the S series is pretty thin considering Sony was able to pack a slot-drive and dedicated graphics in that frame.

But why don't they have an 8GB soldered option? That would solve my problem.

The only other option is to wait until 16GB modules are affordable (currently they cost 10x more than 8GB).. and by then I might have a new laptop.

Either due to cost savings or incentive for the consumer to upgrade again next year when they release the new S with 8gb soldered instead of 4.

Either way I don't like it as I'm looking to get the S13P soon and would have liked having 16gb instead of 12. Oh well...

I call Sony's bull, this isn't the first or last of these kinds of crappy excuses for engineering. If Apple could squeeze two DIMM slots in to a regular Macbook pro (non retina) which is already damn thin, then Sony has no excuse considering the price range and slightly greater bulk of the S15. This on top of the fact that they also software crippled the SATA III bay to hamper aftermarket upgrades.

Not to mention the fact that they won't allow you to choose the SSD option if you don't opt for the 2GB version of the 640M LE.

Which is beyond ridiculous as those two things have literally NOTHING in common.

Strange, in Canada, I can configure the S15 with SSD without having to also get the 2GB Nvidia card. However, at the prices they charge for the SSDs ($500 for 2x128)!!! I will probably pass on that and get an aftermarket SSD and deal with the SATAII limitation until someone releases a BIOS hack.
